The Importance of Water for Your Waistline

You’ve heard it before and I’ll say it again: water is an integral part of any weight management program. Let me count the ways.

1) Water makes you feel full

Drinking a glass or two before a meal can help you consume less. By sipping throughout the day instead of reaching for an unhealthy snack, you can avoid hunger pangs. In fact, much of the time when we feel hungry we are actually thirsty! So next time you feel hungry, try reaching for a glass of water instead.

2) Drinking cold water burns more calories

That’s right. When we drink cold water our bodies have to work to get that water up to our body temperature, and can burn up to 23 calories per 16 oz of cold water.

3) Replace empty calories

When we choose water over other beverages like soda and coffee, we are cutting down on the empty calories we would otherwise consume. Studies show that flavoring your water helps you drink more water, so try adding lemon, lime, or therapeutic-grade essential oils to your water.

4) Water flushes toxins

Water–particularly ionized alkaline water from a water ionizer–can help flush toxins and fat from the body which would otherwise be stored. We need to be drinking a minimum of half our body weight in ounces daily just to replace the water lost through normal bodily functions. When we drink more than the minimum we are providing our body with water to flush out unnecessary toxins.

Leo Babauta of Zen Habits teaches that you can turn anything into a habit, and that it’s important to conquer one habit at a time instead of getting burned out by trying to do a whole lifestyle shift at once. He says that it’s important to start small, and gives the example of flossing saying that instead of committing to flossing daily, commit to flossing ONE tooth. Surely once you’ve started you will find yourself flossing the rest of them, and the key is to set goals so ridiculously small that you can’t imagine not doing them.
With this in mind, we compiled the following list of healthy habits. We recommend that you pick the one that sounds the least challenging to you, start conquering it today, and then move on to the next habit in 3-4 weeks or so.
Here are 7 healthy habits that can change your life:
1. Hydrate properly
Most of us simply do not drink enough water to keep our body adequately hydrated. The new recommendation is to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water daily, and more if you live in a hot climate or are extremely active. Work your way up to this goal one day at a time. For example, if your target is to drink 80 ounces per day and you are currently only drinking 16 ounces, add another glass today, two tomorrow, and so on until you reach your goal. 2. Get juicing

If the idea of cutting the crap sounds too daunting, you can do the opposite and crowd out the bad with the good. Try adding one new alkaline food to your shopping cart each week or start eating one salad a day. As you start to eat more alkaline foods your taste buds will change and you will eventually no longer crave the processed crap.
5. Get Moving
Of course exercise is an integral part of health and a surefire way to boost your mood. Aim to do alkaline exercises like walking, yoga, Pilates, jogging, rebounding and stretching at least three times a week.
6. Switch to natural products
Commercial beauty products and cleaners contain toxic ingredients that wreak havoc on your health. 2012 is the Year of the Water Dragon

In Chinese element theory, water produces wood, which signifies growth and is the natural element of the dragon.

The last time the Water Dragon made an appearance was in the year 1952. Major world events in 1952 included the beginning of Queen  Elizabeth II’s reign, the introduction of two of the most destructive weapons in history: the hydrogen bomb and the B-52 bomber, the first successful separation of Siamese twins, and a killer fog which descended on London and coined the word “smog.” So it will be interesting to see what 2012 will bring, especially with the US presidential election and of course all of the Mayan calendar end-of-the-world hype.

Ways to Jazz up the Flavor of Water

We at Chanson Water love the taste of alkaline pH 9.5 water produced by our water ionizers. Taste may vary by source water, although one customer from Riverside County CA (whose tap water is ranked the #4 WORST in America) loves the taste of her ionized water!

However, we recognize that drinking nothing but water day in and day out can become a bit tedious at times. But instead of reaching for acidic drinks like coffee, soda, black tea, processed “fruit” juice, sports and energy drinks or alcohol, we offer the following (mostly alkaline) suggestions as additives to your ionized water:

  • Crushed fresh mint leaf
  • Lemon wedges
  • Lime wedges
  • Cucumber slices
  • Splash of coconut water
  • Slice of ginger
  • Green tea (sweeten with Stevia)
  • Cinnamon essential oil
