Are You at Risk for a Waterborne Bacterial Illness?

You’ve likely heard the phrase “don’t drink the water” in relation to travel within Mexico, which is notorious for its high bacterial levels.

But did you know that you may also be at risk for bacterial illness as a result of drinking tap or well water in the US?

Waterborne Bacterial Illness

Tap water causes an estimated 18.4 million cases of stomach illnesses in the US each year. Most of these illnesses are caused by pathogens such as bacteria and viruses that escape water treatment efforts, while sewage leaks and flooding also contribute to the problem.

While an upset stomach is the most common symptom of a bacterial waterborne illness, flu-like symptoms and even death may result, such as in the case of the brain-eating Amoeba bacteria.

Additionally, one study on illnesses associated with tap water showed that serious diseases including cancer, diabetes, heart disease and autoimmune dysfunctions can occur weeks or even months after a stomach illness and is known as chronic sequelae.

Those with an increased risk of pathogen-born illnesses include the elderly, pregnant women, young children, the chronically ill and those undergoing immunosuppressive therapy, which makes up about 25% of the US population.

UC Berkley conducted a tap water study among 988 Sonoma County residents over age 55. Although the water met all federal and state water quality standards, researchers found a 12% decrease in self-reported gastrointestinal illnesses in those who filtered their water versus those who did not.

Bacterial Water Filtration

While some recommend UV light as a bacterial treatment for water, that method has many flaws. If the UV bulb gets even the slightest haze on it, the UV light becomes ineffective at killing bacteria, and you may not know when the bulb stops working. Additionally, the speed at which the water flows past the light makes it difficult to be effective. Most disturbingly, after a UV light kills bacteria, the bacteria still remains in the water for you to consume!

Cleopatra’s Beauty Secret: Revealed

It is widely believed that Cleopatra’s beautiful skin can be attributed to bathing in milk and honey. But what if that wasn’t her only beauty secret? What if the water she drank also played a significant role?

Even more interesting is that in Grecian and Roman times, water was stored in urns of copper and brass overnight. The end result of which was clear and sweet drinking water, due to the electrolytic reaction that took place in the copper and brass.

Copper is a chemical element with a very high thermal and electrical conductivity, and brass is a mixture of copper and zinc, an alkaline mineral. So it appears that ancient Greeks and Romans are the actual founders of water ionization, a discovery which took place before Christ was even born!

Presumably, only the rich could afford these urns and this water purification method, and thus it is conceivable that Cleopatra would have drank ionized water, regardless of if she were aware of the science behind it. (Although Cleopatra ruled Egypt, she was of Greek decent and eventually joined Cesar in Rome.)

4000-2000 B.C.

Ancient Sanskrit and Greek writings recommended water treatment methods such as filtering through charcoal, exposing to sunlight, boiling, and straining in order to improve appearance of water.

1500 B.C.

To clarify water, the Egyptians reportedly used the chemical alum to cause suspended particles to settle out of water, and also siphoned water through a series of clay pots.

Egyptians and Greeks discovered that if they swirled and left water in copper and brass urns overnight, it turned sweeter (a mild form of ionization).

The Roman Empire built an extensive aqueduct system, with eleven aqueducts serving the city.

500 B.C.

The Greek scientist Hippocrates invented the first cloth bag filter and called it the “Hippocratic sleeve.”

1627

Sir Robert Bacon began experimenting with a form of sand filtration to remove salt particles from seawater.

1676

Anton van Leeuwenhoek became the first person to discover microorganisms in water.

1700s

Domestic water filter units made from wool, sponge, and charcoal began to be used in individual homes.

1804

The first large municipal water treatment plant was installed in Scotland in order to provide treated water to every resident.

1829

Evian water company was formed and began selling the water in earthenware.

1854

Several cities began to treat all water with sand filters and chlorine before distributing it to the public after British scientist John Snow discovered that he could use chlorine to kill bacteria in water.

1869

The first desalination patent was reported, and the first land-based steam distillation plant was established in Britain.

Late 1800’s

Municipal water treatment began to take hold in the U.S. Rapid sand filtration is experimented with, along with cleaning filters with powerful steam jets. A rapid decrease in waterborne diseases is noted at this time.

Early 1900’s

The first water ionizers are invented in Russia, designed to recreate what happens in nature when water runs over rocks–alkaline pH water with a low ORP (oxidation reduction potential).

1903

Water softeners, which use sodium ions to replace water-hardening minerals in water, were introduced into the water treatment market.

1908

Chlorine was used for the first time as a primary disinfectant of drinking water in Jersey City, New Jersey. The use of other disinfectants such as ozone also began in Europe around this time.

1914

Limited drinking water standards for municipalities in U.S. cities were implemented.

1940s

Federal drinking water standards were widely applied in the U.S.

1945

Fluoroide began to be added to the municipal tap water sources under the guise of preventing dental decay.

1958

The first residential water ionizer was developed and sold in Japan.

1960s

The American government created and funded the Office of Saline Water to research and develop desalination technologies.

1966

The Japanese Health Ministry approved the water ionizer as a “Health Improving Medical Device.”

1959

The Reverse Osmosis (R/O) extreme water filtration method is invented by Prof Reid of the University of Florida.

Late 1960s

Industrial and agricultural advances and the creation of new man-made chemicals had negative impacts on the environment and public health when they began finding their way into water supplies through factory discharges, street and farm field runoff, and leaking underground storage and disposal tanks.

1966

Heinz Hankammer began production of the first Brita filter under a pear tree in his family’s garden.

1970s

Perrier introduces carbonated bottled water.

1972

The Clean Water Act became law, requiring industrial plants to proactively improve their waste procedures in order to limit the effect of contaminants on freshwater sources.

1974

The Safe Drinking Water Act was adopted by all 50 states for the regulation of U.S. public water systems. This law specified 91 pollutants that must be closely monitored (out of more than 60,000).

1980

500 million gallons of bottled water are sold in the US.

1990

U.S. annual sales of bottled water spurted to 1.8 billion gallons.

Early 2000s

Municipalities begin to increase chloramine (chlorine + ammonia) usage as a disinfectant in tap water.

2006

Almost 36  billion plastic water bottles are sold in the U.S.

Today

Bottled water consumption remains at an all-time high and municipalities continue to add harmful chemicals like chlorine, chloramine and fluoride to the drinking water. Most water filter owners are either over- or under-filtering their tap water, and water ionizers remain virtually unknown outside of Asia despite their proven health benefits. The Dangers of Using Your Refrigerators Built-In Water & Ice Dispenser

Many modern refrigerators now feature built-in water and ice dispensers. While they can be very convenient, these dispensers also pose some health hazards that you should be aware of.

Why Reverse Osmosis Water is Harmful to Health

The extreme water filtration process known as reverse osmosis rids tap water of virtually all nasty toxins, contaminants and bacteria, making it as pure and crystal clear as can be.

Sounds great, right?

Not exactly.

The problem with reverse osmosis (R/O) is that it works TOO well. In addition to removing all of the impurities, it also strips the water of all the valuable alkaline minerals your body needs to thrive. What’s in Your Water?

According to a report by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), “There are a number of threats to drinking water: improperly disposed of chemicals; animal wastes; pesticides; human threats; wastes injected underground; and naturally occurring substances can all contaminate drinking water. Likewise, drinking water that is not properly treated or disinfected, or which travels through an improperly maintained distribution system, may also pose a health risk.”

Bottled waters are not heavily regulated and thus not immune from these threats, which is why many authorities including the EPA and the Presidents Cancer Panel are currently recommending filtered tap water over bottled water.

Here is a snapshot of some of the most common chemicals and contaminants that may be lurking in your water but can effectively be filtered out with a prefilter or whole house filtration system:

Chlorine

Chlorine is intentionally added to the majority of municipal tap water supplies in order to kill bacteria. “Chlorine is so dangerous,” according to biologist/chemist Dr. Herbert Schwartz, “that it should be banned. Putting chlorine in the water is like starting a time bomb. Cancer, heart trouble, premature senility, both mental and physical are conditions attributable to chlorine treated water supplies. It is making us grow old before our time by producing symptoms of ageing such as hardening of the arteries.”

Because hot showers create a steam which is inhaled and causes our pores to dilate, our skin and lungs absorb as much chlorine during one ten minute shower as it would if we drank eight 8-oz. glasses of the same water! According to the EPA, “Breathing small amounts of chlorine for short periods of time adversely affects the human respiratory system. Fluoride

Many municipalities add fluoride to our water supply under the guise that it is supposed to help strengthen baby teeth. According to the scientific research, fluoride consumption creates multiple hazards with respect to cancer. Fluoride can actually produce cancer, transforming normal human cells into cancerous ones, even at concentrations of only 1ppm (parts per million) – the official “safe” dosage set by the U.S. Public Health Service for drinking water.

The fluoride which is added to 90% of drinking water is actually hydrofluoric acid which is a manmade compound with no nutritional value and a chemical byproduct of aluminum, steel, cement, phosphate, and nuclear weapons manufacturing. Several bottled waters including Arrowhead, Sparkletts, Poland Springs and Crystal Springs contain fluoride, which means that if they are using the conventional reverse osmosis method they actually took the time to put this poison back into their product!

Heavy Metals – Mercury, Lead, Arsenic

Too much lead or mercury in the human body can cause serious damage to the brain, nervous system and kidneys. Infants and young children are especially vulnerable to heavy metal poisoning, and even at low levels, it can affect a child’s physical development and ability to learn. Arsenic has been linked to cancer of the bladder, lungs, skin, kidney, nasal passages, liver, and prostate. Non-cancer effects can include thickening and discoloration of the skin, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting; diarrhea; numbness in hands and feet; partial paralysis; and blindness. Chloroform and trichloroethylene

Chloroform (a Trihalomethane or THM) and trichloroethylene (TCE) are two highly volatile toxic chemicals that have been identified in many municipal drinking-water supplies. The National Academy of Sciences has estimated that 200-1,000 people may die in the U.S. each year from cancers caused by ingesting these contaminants in water. According to a study by Dr. Julian Andelman, hot showers (109F) can liberate about 50% of the dissolved chloroform and 80% of the dissolved TCE into the air, and both the heat and the large surface-to-volume ratio of small droplets increase vaporization. TCE, chloroform, benzene and others are readily absorbed through the lungs into the bloodstream.

Pharmacutical drugs

In 2008, the Associated Press published a report that found various pharmaceutical compounds in the water supplies of 24 major metropolitan areas across the United States serving over 51 million Americans. Do you really want to be drinking traces of someone else’s antibiotics, mood stabilizers, sex hormones, steroids or painkillers?

VOC’s, Pesticides and Herbicides

Our municipal water treatment facilities do not remove VOC’s (volatile organic compounds), and there are currently more than 60,000 of them in existence, most of which are man-made synthetic chemicals. According to Ralph Nader Research Institute, “U.S. drinking water contains more than 2,100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer.”

Importance of Filtering Chlorine Out of Shower Water

Did you know that during the course of one ten minute shower, your body will absorb as much chlorine as if you were to drink eight 8-oz. glasses of the same water?

Organochlorides can cause mutations by altering DNA, suppress immune system function and interfere with the natural controls of cell growth. Anything you can do to filter tap and shower water that eliminates or minimizes chlorine would certainly be helpful and possibly curative for some immune system problems.
