Addressing the Myth that Stomach Acid Renders Drinking Alkaline Water Useless

One of the common myths and objections we hear is that drinking ionized alkaline water can’t possibly affect the alkalinity of the body since our stomach acid will destroy any alkaline substance ingested.

What people need to understand is that there is no hydrochloric acid pouch in our body, and the stomach wall makes sodium bicarbonate to alkalize our food not to digest it. HCL is only produced when we eat or drink acid-forming foods and drinks and is balanced in equal proportion by sodium bicarbonate production. When we consume alkaline forming foods and drink alkaline ionized water, the body does not need the sodium bicarbonate production and thus the HCL production is not required either.

People also mistakingly assume that when we drink ionized alkaline water we are trying to impact the alkalinity of the blood, which must remain at a very precise pH in order to live. In actuality, drinking ionized alkaline water can affect the alkalinity of our intracellular fluids and detox on a cellular level. It is not our goal to mess with the pH of the blood but rather to give the body the bioavailable alkaline minerals it requires to balance the blood pH naturally without having to steal from other places in the body such as the bones, teeth and eyes.

However, in one 2014 study titled Hydrogen-rich water affected blood alkalinity in physically active men, 26 men were given 2 liters of hydrogen-rich (alkaline) water to drink for 14 days while another 26 men were given a placebo (tap water). The results of this double blind randomized study were that
the intake of HRW significantly increased fasting arterial blood pH by 0.04 and postexercise pH by 0.o7 which suggests that drinking alkaline water can have a positive impact on the blood and that stomach acid does not destroy the alkalinity of the water.Click here for the study

4 Misconceptions About the Alkaline Diet

Critics of the alkaline diet typically profess four main objections, all of which are misconceptions that are easily explained away.

They are:

1. The pH of the blood does not fluctuate widely based on the food you eat

True but misleading. The reason that the blood does not fluctuate is because if it does not remain at right about 7.365 pH you will die. Your body has a built-in self-correcting mechanism for when you eat acidic foods. It literally pulls alkaline minerals from your bones and muscles in order to neutralize the acid and keep you in pH balance. The problem is the damage that this self-correction can cause including bone loss, muscle loss, heart problems, vision loss, reduced energy and more.

So yes, eating alkaline foods will not increase your blood pH, but it will prevent your body from stealing minerals from itself because you are providing the body with a mineral reserve and reducing the amount of acidic foods you eat. When we refer to alkalizing your pH we are referring to the urine and saliva which can be tested with pH strips, not the blood.

2. It doesn’t matter what the pH of the food that you eat is, because your stomach acid will turn it acidic anyway

False. To paraphrase Dr. Robert O. Young: The stomach wall makes sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) to alkalize our food not digest our food. Hydrochloric acid is only produced when we eat or drink acid-forming foods and drinks and is balanced in equal proportion by sodium bicarbonate production. When we consume alkaline forming foods and drink alkaline ionized water, the body does not need the sodium bicarbonate production and thus the hydrochloric acid production is not required either!

3. There is not enough scientific research to back up the alkaline diet

Misleading. As a whole, there may not be a lot of research specifically about the alkaline diet, however numerous studies have shown benefits of vegetarian and vegan diets, as well as health benefits of eating certain fruits and vegetables, cutting out meat, and avoiding processed foods and artificial ingredients. So since the alkaline diet is a largely vegan/vegetarian diet high in fruits and vegetables that cuts out processed foods and artificial ingredients, how can you possibly be skeptical? It’s common sense. Natural whole plant-based foods are good for you, while processed, artificial “junk foods” are not.

4. There are conflicting acid/alkaline food charts so it’s impossible to know which foods to eat

True but not impossible. When referring to an acid/alkaline chart the one question you need to ask is if the chart is showing the pH of the actual food, or the pH of the food after it has been digested. You are looking for the latter, because you want to know what kind of effect that food will have on your body. The most common confusion over this is that lemons are highly acidic by nature, but have a strong alkalizing effect on the body due to their high mineral and low sugar content. So use a set of charts like ours which focus on the pH of the food after it has been digested, and disregard the others. Click here to get your free alkaline/acid food charts.

Shifting to an 80% alkaline/20% acidic diet and drinking ionized alkaline water may help you lose weight, give you increased energy, reverse major health issues including cancer and diabetes, improve your sleep and appearance, and boost your immune system. It is not a fad or a crash diet but rather a permanent shift in your eating habits for overall wellness much like a raw, vegan or vegetarian diet. Try it for yourself, and be sure to share your results!

The Truth About Antacids

Antacids are the #1 selling over-the-counter medication, and the 4th most prescribed prescription drug in the world today.

They provide a quick fix for common digestive problems like heartburn, acid reflux, bloating, and gas pain which are caused by excess acid in your system.

The science behind it

The reason that antacids like Tums, Alka-Seltzer, Mylanta, Rolaids and Maalox work is because they all contain alkaline minerals like calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, and sodium bicarbonate. These alkaline minerals are then able to help neutralize the acid.

But just like how that adding alkaline minerals like baking soda and sea salt to your water to turn it alkaline is not a long-term solution because it can create health problems of its own, so can taking antacids like Tums on a regular basis.

When you ingest overly acidic foods, your body seeks to neutralize those acids naturally by pulling alkaline minerals from its internal reserve. This is because our blood must remain at 7.4 pH in order for us to live, and the body will do whatever it needs to in order to preserve that delicate pH balance.

When your alkaline reserves are low (as we age and continue to eat more and more unhealthy foods), it may have to resort to pulling alkaline minerals from places like our bones, heart and eyes, hence the rise in osteoporosis, heart failure and poor eyesight among middle-aged and elderly people.

The dangers of frequent antacid use

Blocking or reducing the production of your stomach acid by ingesting antacids can leave you undernourished, because your body may not be able to properly absorb the proteins and vitamins from your food.

When you are undernourished your immune system can break down, making you more susceptible to things like food poisoning, parasites, peptic ulcers and more. These can be caused by the fungi and bacteria in your food that would normally be killed by the stomach acid.

A better solution

When you follow an alkaline diet consisting of 80% alkaline foods and drink plenty of ionized alkaline water, your odds of experiencing common digestive problems decrease dramatically.

Think about it. When was the last time you experienced heartburn, bloating or gas pains? It most likely wasn’t after finishing off a plate of steamed veggies or a healthy salad. No, those issues usually arrive after you eat things like a burger and fries–unhealthy acidic foods our bodies have a hard time digesting.

Many people are confused about the effectiveness of ionized alkaline water, believing that stomach acid will render it useless. Dr. Robert O. Young explains, “Alkaline electron-rich water…does not trigger the release of sodium bicarbonate and thus does not cause the creation of the acid HCl, so it does not interfere with the alkalizing of the food. In fact alkaline electron-rich water with its high concentration of electrons helps the alkalizing of the food and also helps to neutralize the caustic acidic poisonous HCL, preventing the acidification of the blood and tissues.”

So rather than treat the symptoms of overacidity with an over-the-counter or prescription antacid which can cause further health issues, we recommend that you eat more alkaline foods and drink Chanson ionized alkaline water daily. Alkaline Ionized Water & Water Ionizer Myths Debunked

Because there is a lot of misinformation on the Internet regarding water ionizers and alkaline ionized water, we thought it would be a good idea to compile a list of the most common myths and provide the truth.

Here are 5 top myths, debunked:

Won’t my stomach acid render alkaline water consumption useless?

No. There is no hydrochloric acid pouch in our body, and the stomach wall makes sodium bicarbonate to alkalize our food not digest our food. HCL is only produced when we eat or drink acid-forming foods and drinks and is balanced in equal proportion by sodium bicarbonate production. When we consume alkaline forming foods and drink alkaline ionzed water, the body does not need the sodium bicarbonate production and thus the HCL production is not required either!

Dr. Robert O. Young explains, “Alkaline electron-rich water…does not trigger the release of sodium bicarbonate and thus does not cause the creation of the acid HCl, so it does not interfere with the alkalizing of the food. In fact, alkaline electron-rich water–with its high concentration of electrons–helps the alkalizing of the food and also helps to neutralize the caustic acidic poisonous HCL, preventing the acidification of the blood and tissues.”

Can’t I make my own alkaline water with lemon juice, baking soda or pH drops?

Technically the pH level of water can be modified slightly by adding certain substances, however they will not necessarily reach the optimal pH level of 9.5. More importantly, alkalizing the water without the use of a water ionizer will not reduce the ORP, so the water will still be oxidizing to the body and create free radicals which destroy cells. Ionization is also the only way to microcluster the water, which allows it to hydrate up to six times better than non-ionized water, and detoxify cells more thoroughly. For these same reasons, drinking alkaline water from a non-electric ionizer or by making your own with alkaline water pouches and the like will not provide the bulk of the benefits that an electric water ionizer does. See our article Why Non-Electric “Ionizers” Can’t Compare With Chanson Ionizer Machines for more information.

When it comes to ionizers, isn’t more power a good thing?

More power can actually wear down your ionizers plates faster. At only 150 watts and 5 amps, Chanson water ionizers use the least power of any ionizer without sacrificing quality or performance. Both the Miracle M.A.X. and the upcoming Revolution Chanson ionizers use a sophisticated SMPS power system–the same one that is used in the new flat-screen panel TVs. This system automatically adjusts the power to the plates based on the rate of water flow, doubling the longevity of your unit!

Isn’t mesh technology is better than solid ionizer plates because it increases surface area?

The idea of mesh plates being better than solid plates is mostly all just marketing hype. We have found little difference in performance between mesh vs. solid plates. Despite many tests we have not seen a benefit from mesh or slotted plates, and we have found that in some cases, the coating actually wears off faster or has problems with rust. Therefore we continue to offer only original, double-dipped and baked solid plates on all of our ionizers.

Isn’t UV technology a valuable upgrade for an ionizer?

We consider the UV technology in a water ionizer to be a marketing ploy that provides little if any actual benefit to the customer. While UV is used in commercial water treatment, we do not believe that the contact time between the water and the UV light in an ionizer is sufficient to kill bacteria. And even if it does kill any, it doesn’t remove it so you would still be drinking dead bacteria. Furthermore, we have been told that once the light burns out, it can not be replaced. Currently in the USA, all city water has been treated with chlorine or chloramines which will have already killed any bacteria in your water. If you have well water or bacteria concerns, we offer the Chanson Ultra Filter which will remove bacteria and not clog.
