F is for Flaxseed + Alkaline Recipes to Try

This is the sixth installment of our alkaline foods series where we feature a food from A-Z, sharing the benefits of the food along with suggested recipes to try!

F is for Flaxseed

Flaxseeds contain omega-3 essential fatty acids, lignans (which have both plant estrogen and antioxidant qualities), and both soluble and insoluble fiber.  According to the Flax Council of Canada, 1-2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed a day is currently the suggested dose.

You can add flaxseeds to smoothies, juices, salads, waffles, pancakes, breads, cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, croutons, soups and more. And you can use flaxseed oil as a salad dressing or any time oil is called for in a recipe.

Flaxseed and flaxseed oil promote health in many ways including:

  • Protective effect against cancer
  • Antioxidant which fights free radicals
  • Lowers cholesterol
  • Helps protect against heart disease and irregular heartbeat
  • Improves blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetics
  • Helps reduce hot flashes in menopausal women
  • Aids in weight loss
  • Anti-inflammatory properties

Alkaline Recipe: Green Machine Smoothie

Green Machine Smoothie

Serves 1

While parsley may not be your first choice to add to a smoothie, it’s packed with nutrients and this recipe helps to mask the taste. Trust us, we didn’t care for parsley either, but we love the taste of the Green Machine Smoothie.

Fun fact: Actress Sarah Jessica Parker is rumored to dislike parsley so much that she learned how to say “no parsley please” in some six languages!

Ingredients:

  • 2 handfuls baby spinach
  • 1 handful parsley
  • 2 frozen bananas, peeled
  •  1 kiwi, peeled
  • 1 piece fresh pineapple (1″ thick)
  • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 2-4 oz. Chanson ionized alkaline water

Directions: Soak spinach and parsley in a bowl of8.0-8.5 pH Chanson ionized alkaline water for 10 minutes. Add all ingredients to a high speed blender (using fresh Chanson water – more for a thinner smoothie, less for a thicker one). Serve.

Tip: To make frozen bananas, peel and chunk into 1-2 inch pieces and place in ice cube trays. Freeze for at least 6 hours. You can put any remaining frozen bananas in a freezer safe bag to keep on hand.
