Alkaline Ionized Water & Water Ionizer Myths Debunked

Because there is a lot of misinformation on the Internet regarding water ionizers and alkaline ionized water, we thought it would be a good idea to compile a list of the most common myths and provide the truth.

Here are 5 top myths, debunked:

Won’t my stomach acid render alkaline water consumption useless?

No. There is no hydrochloric acid pouch in our body, and the stomach wall makes sodium bicarbonate to alkalize our food not digest our food. HCL is only produced when we eat or drink acid-forming foods and drinks and is balanced in equal proportion by sodium bicarbonate production. When we consume alkaline forming foods and drink alkaline ionzed water, the body does not need the sodium bicarbonate production and thus the HCL production is not required either!

Dr. Robert O. Young explains, “Alkaline electron-rich water…does not trigger the release of sodium bicarbonate and thus does not cause the creation of the acid HCl, so it does not interfere with the alkalizing of the food. In fact, alkaline electron-rich water–with its high concentration of electrons–helps the alkalizing of the food and also helps to neutralize the caustic acidic poisonous HCL, preventing the acidification of the blood and tissues.”

Can’t I make my own alkaline water with lemon juice, baking soda or pH drops?

Technically the pH level of water can be modified slightly by adding certain substances, however they will not necessarily reach the optimal pH level of 9.5. More importantly, alkalizing the water without the use of a water ionizer will not reduce the ORP, so the water will still be oxidizing to the body and create free radicals which destroy cells. Ionization is also the only way to microcluster the water, which allows it to hydrate up to six times better than non-ionized water, and detoxify cells more thoroughly. For these same reasons, drinking alkaline water from a non-electric ionizer or by making your own with alkaline water pouches and the like will not provide the bulk of the benefits that an electric water ionizer does. See our article Why Non-Electric “Ionizers” Can’t Compare With Chanson Ionizer Machines for more information.

When it comes to ionizers, isn’t more power a good thing?

More power can actually wear down your ionizers plates faster. At only 150 watts and 5 amps, Chanson water ionizers use the least power of any ionizer without sacrificing quality or performance. Both the Miracle M.A.X. and the upcoming Revolution Chanson ionizers use a sophisticated SMPS power system–the same one that is used in the new flat-screen panel TVs. This system automatically adjusts the power to the plates based on the rate of water flow, doubling the longevity of your unit!

Isn’t mesh technology is better than solid ionizer plates because it increases surface area?

The idea of mesh plates being better than solid plates is mostly all just marketing hype. We have found little difference in performance between mesh vs. solid plates. Despite many tests we have not seen a benefit from mesh or slotted plates, and we have found that in some cases, the coating actually wears off faster or has problems with rust. Therefore we continue to offer only original, double-dipped and baked solid plates on all of our ionizers.

Isn’t UV technology a valuable upgrade for an ionizer?

We consider the UV technology in a water ionizer to be a marketing ploy that provides little if any actual benefit to the customer. While UV is used in commercial water treatment, we do not believe that the contact time between the water and the UV light in an ionizer is sufficient to kill bacteria. And even if it does kill any, it doesn’t remove it so you would still be drinking dead bacteria. Furthermore, we have been told that once the light burns out, it can not be replaced. Currently in the USA, all city water has been treated with chlorine or chloramines which will have already killed any bacteria in your water. If you have well water or bacteria concerns, we offer the Chanson Ultra Filter which will remove bacteria and not clog.

What is the Difference Between a $4,000, a $2,000 and a $400 Water Ionizer?

If you are in the market for a water ionizer you may have noticed that there is a significant difference in price for certain models and wonder what could possibly justify such a difference. In reality, all electric water ionizers make good alkaline ionized water, regardless of brand, and all non-electric ionizers make alkaline water. Here we will address where the differences really lie in an effort to help you make an informed decision:

The $4,000 electric water ionizer – A MLM Model

You will receive the same health benefits of drinking and cooking with a $4,000 electric water ionizer as you will from an electric water ionizer which costs about half. The real reason that some models carry such a high price tag is because they are from a MLM (multi-level marketing) company which has to pay commission to eight different people with every sale. If you are anything like us, you will see that spending an extra $2,000 for the same product in order to pay bonuses to salespeople is ludicrous and will consider your other options.

The $1,300-2,300 electric water ionizer – All Chanson Water ionizers

All electric water ionizers produce three types of water with various pH levels: alkaline, filtered, and acidic. We drink the alkaline water with a pH of 8.0-9.5 for optimal health, use the filtered water for small children and taking with medication, and apply the acidic water on our skin and hair and can clean and disinfect our homes, cars and offices with it.

Because an electric water ionizer is such a versatile and multipurpose appliance, you could potentially save thousands per year by eliminating the need for bottled water, mouthwash, toner, half of all cleaning supplies, skin creams, etc. by investing in an electric water ionizer. Chanson water ionizers carry a price tag in the $1,300-$2,300 range which means that machine will likely pay for itself in 2-3 years and be one of the best investments you will ever make.

The difference in prices on the Chanson models are largely attributed to water flow rate and various bells and whistles like an undercounter model to save counterspace, ability to use all natural Himalayan rock salt to make strong acid water in areas with source water issues and a special cleaning system.

$400 Water “Ionizers”/Alkalizers – Non-Electric Models

Because people started seeing the success that electric water ionizers were having, they looked for a way to cash in on the success cheaply and quickly. After all, if people were willing to spend up to $4,000 on an ionizer, wouldn’t people be willing to pay only 10% of that?

Because non-electrics leave out the key component of water ionization – electricity – they are not actually ionizers but alkalizers. They produce alkaline water which is only about two points more alkaline on the pH scale than the water that is run through them. Non-electrics do not produce filtered/purified/neutral water or the acidic water which is so valuable for skincare and cleaning purposes. In addition, the negative charge (low ORP) they produce is only about 1/3 of what an electric ionizer can produce which means you are only getting 1/3 of the antioxidants.

Even more disturbing, most non-electrics use mineral-stripping filtration which in most cases is provided by toxic De-Ionization (DI) Resin. When the resin has reached capacity (no way of knowing when without testing) it will actually allow the contaminants into your water and the resin itself may also leech into your water. They then attempt to re-mineralize the water with “secret ingredients” that are impossible to test or verify and have no testing to back them up or poof that they are safe for long-term human use.

A prominent salesman from another ionizer company (who has been in the industry for over nine years and had been drinking water from an electric ionizer) personally told us that he recently tried their new non-electric product exclusively for two months during which time the arthritis he has suffered from before discovering ionized water came back with a vengeance. Within two days of getting back on the electrically ionized water, the arthritis retreated completely. Our own health expert Ronnie Ruiz has used multiple NON electric ionizers exclusively for two week periods and has always noticed the superior health results of the ELECTRICALLY ionized water when returning to it, proving his theory that electricity is the key.

While the cost of these non-electrics may seem appealing, the decreased value they provide and the replacement costs actually add up to be less cost-effective than an a safer, more versatile, longer-lasting $2,000 electric ionizer purchase. Chanson Water Ionizer

Why Non-Electric “Ionizers” Don’t Compare to Chanson Water Ionizer Machines

Electric ionizer machines are the original water ionizer products released on the world market that produce both alkaline and acid water through electrolysis, but now more and more non-electric “ionizers” seem to be popping up at a fraction of the price claiming to be just as good if not better than the Real McCoy.

Where did these non-electric “ionizers” come from? Well, it’s really simple. They came from people that want to sell a product and they saw the success of the electric ionizer water machines so they figured “Well, a water ionizer costs between $1,000–$2,000 and if I can make a water ionizer that sells for $300–$400, I’m going to become a multi-millionaire!”

The truth is that when water flows over rocks in nature, it naturally ionizes the water, and  our electric water ionizer machines are designed to re-create this process found in nature since not everyone has a waterfall in their backyard. When nature ionizes that water, it does so through ferocious movement and friction over metals and rocks in the river bed which creates an electrical charge amongst the minerals in the water. So then how can something that has no electricity duplicate the way nature makes ionized water through movement and ferocious friction?

The simplest analogy to understand the differences in the two products would be that an electric ionizer is like a water fall, and the non-electric “ionizer” is like a lake. Now where would you prefer to collect your drinking water from? The lake is a stagnant, dead body of water. It contains minerals; it contains things that might be of benefit to the body, but it’s not the living water that we know provides optimal hydration.

So let’s take a look at what benefits and alterations each product actually make to the water.

Chanson Electric Water Ionizer vs. Competitor Non-Electric Water “Ionizer”

Chanson Electric Water Ionizers Provide:

Alkaline water for drinking

Acidic water for disinfecting and skin care

-Purified water for use with medication

-Adjustable levels of pH to suit the personal needs of you, your family and even pets

-Certified microclustered water molecules which are up to six times more hydrating

-A negative charge (low ORP) which means it has anti-oxidant properties

-Safe delivery of extra oxygen to your cells

-Filtration of harmful chemicals, toxins, and bacteria

-Tracking of when the filter needs to be changed

-NSF certificiation and he history to back them up – we have the testing, the animal studies, the human studies and are the ones that are used in hospitals all over the world

Competitor Non-Electric Ionizers Provide:

-A two point increase in pH level. This means that if your base water is only a 5 pH, you would only be bringing it up to a neutral 7 pH instead of alkaline water (which would still be better than an acidic 5 pH but important to note). Also, if you are using a base water with a pH of 8 or higher–there are actually quite a few areas around the United States where the tap water is a 9 pH–you could potentially be raising the alkalinity above the recommended 9.5 pH level.

-A negative charge (low ORP) that is only about 1/3 of what an electric ionizer can produce

-Mineral-stripping filtration which in most cases is provided by De-Ionization (DI) Resin which is a toxin that’s basically Super Glue and tar mixed together. When the resin has reached capacity (no way of knowing when without testing) it will actually allow the contaminants into your water and if it’s a low-quality resin the resin itself will also leech into your water. We asked eight water experts who have been in the water filtration industry 10-30 years what their opinion on DI Resin for drinking water products was. Every one of them answered by saying, “DI resin is the nastiest stuff out there and I would never drink a glass of water that’s passed through it.”

-Re-mineralization of the water with “secret ingredients” that are impossible to test or verify

-Uncertified claims of microclustering the water

-No testing to back them up or poof that they are safe for long-term human use

Clearly, non-electric water “ionizers” are inferior to our electric Chanson water ionizers and should not be considered comparable. While they do provide some benefits, they should not be considered “ionizers.”

The only non-electric product we offer is our AlkaTraveler Stick (ATS) which is best described as a portable alkalizer, not an “ionizer.” It is the ONLY product in its category to pass the NSF safety tests in the USA and is safe for long-term use. The ATS contains only natural ingredients (calcium, vitamin C, tourmaline and magnesium) and is not a filter so it should not be used with unfiltered tap water. It is priced at $89, which is a far cry from the $300-$400 that competitors charge for their non-electric “ionizers.” Its design is more compact and convenient than competitor models and comes in a carrying case that can easily fit in your pocket.
