Here are the show notes:

SUMMARY

There are many toxins in our environment that you should limit your exposure to, chlorinated water being one of them.

A FEW OF MY FAVORITE EXCERPTS:

The problem with chlorine is actually in the by-products, called organochlorines, created when it mixes with organic materials such as leaves, algae or even human skin. There are thousands of different chlorine by-products, and very few of hem have been studied for safety or are being tracked in our water reserves. (pg 47)

Chlorine and its by-products enter the body through ingestion, inhalation and skin absorption. as the shower water heats up, the same by-products turn to vapor, making them easy to inhale. At the same time, the heat also enlarges the pores in the skin, allowing for easy absorption.
 (pg 48)

Chlorine by-products have been linked to several types of cancer, including cancers of the bladder, liver, rectum, and colon. A study at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland concluded, “people living in areas served by chlorinated water have twice the risk of contracting cancer” than those who have non-chlorinated water sources. (pg 48)

Are You Bathing In Chemical Toxins?

You wouldn’t bathe in your swimming pool, so why are most Americans showering in unfiltered, chlorinated water?

Municipal water districts are required by law to add chlorine or chloramines (chlorine + ammonia) to our water supply in order to disinfect and prevent the spread of bacteria.

It sounds great in theory.

After all, no one wants to drink or wash in water that is contaminated with bacteria and other germs. But the problem is that chlorine and chloramines create carcinogenic byproducts which are both absorbed through our skin and inhaled.

The dangers of bathing in chlorinated water

60% of all we put on our skin is absorbed directly into our blood stream, and even just a 10-minute shower can cause you to absorb more chlorine than if you drank 64 ounces of the same water. In fact, the University of Pittsburgh conducted a study which showed 6X higher levels of chloroform through inhalation vs. water consumption. This is because the byproducts of chlorine create a gas that is easily inhaled.

Chlorine and its byproducts have been linked to the following ailments: hardening of arteries, destruction of proteins in the body, aggravation of asthma, allergies, sinus conditions, and respiratory problems, accelerated aging, altered cholesterol levels, genetic mutations that can lead to cancer growth, high blood pressure, heart trouble, and irritation/dryness of skin and hair.

Whenever you shower, take a bath, use the dishwasher or washing machine, brush your teeth, wash your hands, or flush your toilet, VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are released into your home and inhaled, unless that water has been properly filtered. Your exposure to VOCs and other harmful chemicals can be reduced with a Whole House Filter.

How to reduce your exposure to chlorine & its byproducts

The Chanson Water Dove Whole House Filter filters every tap in your home, so that you and your family are protected from chlorine and its toxic byproducts. However, it is not recommended as a standalone filter for drinking water, as it does not filter out other harmful contaminants like fluoride, lead and arsenic, which is why we recommend pairing it with a Chanson drinking water pre-filter.

If you cannot afford a Whole House Filter or want added protection, a Chanson Spa Shower Filter is an affordable solution. They quickly and easily attach to every shower head in your home to filter chlorine and its byproducts from your shower water, and are the only shower filter on the market to also soften and energize the water. As a result you will notice better looking and more manageable skin and hair.

The Evolution of Water Consumption, Filtration, Treatment, and Delivery

Think water filtration or ionized alkaline water is new? It’s been around in one way or another since the beginning of time.

Here’s a historical timeline:

Dark Ages

Early man camped near water sources and collected naturally occuring ionzied alkaline spring water from streams, waterfalls, lakes and rivers using cupped hands, and later buckets and basins.

4000-2000 B.C.

Ancient Sanskrit and Greek writings recommended water treatment methods such as filtering through charcoal, exposing to sunlight, boiling, and straining in order to improve appearance of water.

1500 B.C.

To clarify water, the Egyptians reportedly used the chemical alum to cause suspended particles to settle out of water, and also siphoned water through a series of clay pots.

Egyptians and Greeks discovered that if they swirled and left water in copper and brass urns overnight, it turned sweeter (a mild form of ionization).

The Roman Empire built an extensive aqueduct system, with eleven aqueducts serving the city.

500 B.C.

The Greek scientist Hippocrates invented the first cloth bag filter and called it the “Hippocratic sleeve.”

1627

Sir Robert Bacon began experimenting with a form of sand filtration to remove salt particles from seawater.

1676

Anton van Leeuwenhoek became the first person to discover microorganisms in water.

1700s

Domestic water filter units made from wool, sponge, and charcoal began to be used in individual homes.

1804

The first large municipal water treatment plant was installed in Scotland in order to provide treated water to every resident.

1829

Evian water company was formed and began selling the water in earthenware.

1854

Several cities began to treat all water with sand filters and chlorine before distributing it to the public after British scientist John Snow discovered that he could use chlorine to kill bacteria in water.

1869

The first desalination patent was reported, and the first land-based steam distillation plant was established in Britain.

Late 1800’s

Municipal water treatment began to take hold in the U.S. Rapid sand filtration is experimented with, along with cleaning filters with powerful steam jets. A rapid decrease in waterborne diseases is noted at this time.

Early 1900’s

The first water ionizers are invented in Russia, designed to recreate what happens in nature when water runs over rocks–alkaline pH water with a low ORP (oxidation reduction potential).

1903

Water softeners, which use sodium ions to replace water-hardening minerals in water, were introduced into the water treatment market.

1908

Chlorine was used for the first time as a primary disinfectant of drinking water in Jersey City, New Jersey. The use of other disinfectants such as ozone also began in Europe around this time.

1914

Limited drinking water standards for municipalities in U.S. cities were implemented.

1940s

Federal drinking water standards were widely applied in the U.S.

1945

Fluoroide began to be added to the municipal tap water sources under the guise of preventing dental decay.

1958

The first residential water ionizer was developed and sold in Japan.

1960s

The American government created and funded the Office of Saline Water to research and develop desalination technologies.

1966

The Japanese Health Ministry approved the water ionizer as a “Health Improving Medical Device.”

1959

The Reverse Osmosis (R/O) extreme water filtration method is invented by Prof Reid of the University of Florida.

Late 1960s

Industrial and agricultural advances and the creation of new man-made chemicals had negative impacts on the environment and public health when they began finding their way into water supplies through factory discharges, street and farm field runoff, and leaking underground storage and disposal tanks.

1966

Heinz Hankammer began production of the first Brita filter under a pear tree in his family’s garden.

1974

The Safe Drinking Water Act was adopted by all 50 states for the regulation of U.S. public water systems. This law specified 91 pollutants that must be closely monitored (out of more than 60,000).

1980

500 million gallons of bottled water are sold in the US.

1990

U.S. annual sales of bottled water spurted to 1.8 billion gallons.

Early 2000s

Municipalities begin to increase chloramine (chlorine + ammonia) usage as a disinfectant in tap water.

2006

Almost 36  billion plastic water bottles are sold in the U.S.

Today

Bottled water consumption remains at an all-time high and municipalities continue to add harmful chemicals like chlorine, chloramine and fluoride to the drinking water. Most water filter owners are either over- or under-filtering their tap water, and water ionizers remain virtually unknown outside of Asia despite their proven health benefits. What is wrong with this picture?

Take advantage of the technology our era has afforded us and say goodbye to unhealthy and expensive bottled waters and hello to fresh filtered Chanson ionized alkaline water.

What’s in Your Water?

According to a report by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), “There are a number of threats to drinking water: improperly disposed of chemicals; animal wastes; pesticides; human threats; wastes injected underground; and naturally occurring substances can all contaminate drinking water. Likewise, drinking water that is not properly treated or disinfected, or which travels through an improperly maintained distribution system, may also pose a health risk.”

Bottled waters are not heavily regulated and thus not immune from these threats, which is why many authorities including the EPA and the Presidents Cancer Panel are currently recommending filtered tap water over bottled water.

Here is a snapshot of some of the most common chemicals and contaminants that may be lurking in your water but can effectively be filtered out with a prefilter or whole house filtration system:

Chlorine

Chlorine is intentionally added to the majority of municipal tap water supplies in order to kill bacteria. “Chlorine is so dangerous,” according to biologist/chemist Dr. Herbert Schwartz, “that it should be banned. Putting chlorine in the water is like starting a time bomb. Cancer, heart trouble, premature senility, both mental and physical are conditions attributable to chlorine treated water supplies. It is making us grow old before our time by producing symptoms of ageing such as hardening of the arteries.”

Because hot showers create a steam which is inhaled and causes our pores to dilate, our skin and lungs absorb as much chlorine during one ten minute shower as it would if we drank eight 8-oz. glasses of the same water! According to the EPA, “Breathing small amounts of chlorine for short periods of time adversely affects the human respiratory system. Effects range from coughing and chest pain to water retention in the lungs. Chlorine irritates the skin, the eyes, and the respiratory system.” So installing a shower filter or whole house filtration system that will remove most chlorine is highly recommended.

Fluoride

Many municipalities add fluoride to our water supply under the guise that it is supposed to help strengthen baby teeth. According to the scientific research, fluoride consumption creates multiple hazards with respect to cancer. Fluoride can actually produce cancer, transforming normal human cells into cancerous ones, even at concentrations of only 1ppm (parts per million) – the official “safe” dosage set by the U.S. Public Health Service for drinking water.

The fluoride which is added to 90% of drinking water is actually hydrofluoric acid which is a manmade compound with no nutritional value and a chemical byproduct of aluminum, steel, cement, phosphate, and nuclear weapons manufacturing. Several bottled waters including Arrowhead, Sparkletts, Poland Springs and Crystal Springs contain fluoride, which means that if they are using the conventional reverse osmosis method they actually took the time to put this poison back into their product!

Heavy Metals – Mercury, Lead, Arsenic

Too much lead or mercury in the human body can cause serious damage to the brain, nervous system and kidneys. Infants and young children are especially vulnerable to heavy metal poisoning, and even at low levels, it can affect a child’s physical development and ability to learn. Arsenic has been linked to cancer of the bladder, lungs, skin, kidney, nasal passages, liver, and prostate. Non-cancer effects can include thickening and discoloration of the skin, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting; diarrhea; numbness in hands and feet; partial paralysis; and blindness. Homes built before 1940 may have lead pipes which can leach into your drinking water. If your pipes are made of lead, they should be replaced as soon as possible, but even then lead may find it’s way into your drinking water unless you are using an adequate filter.

Chloroform and trichloroethylene

Chloroform (a Trihalomethane or THM) and trichloroethylene (TCE) are two highly volatile toxic chemicals that have been identified in many municipal drinking-water supplies. The National Academy of Sciences has estimated that 200-1,000 people may die in the U.S. each year from cancers caused by ingesting these contaminants in water. According to a study by Dr. Julian Andelman, hot showers (109F) can liberate about 50% of the dissolved chloroform and 80% of the dissolved TCE into the air, and both the heat and the large surface-to-volume ratio of small droplets increase vaporization. TCE, chloroform, benzene and others are readily absorbed through the lungs into the bloodstream.

Pharmacutical drugs

In 2008, the Associated Press published a report that found various pharmaceutical compounds in the water supplies of 24 major metropolitan areas across the United States serving over 51 million Americans. Do you really want to be drinking traces of someone else’s antibiotics, mood stabilizers, sex hormones, steroids or painkillers?

VOC’s, Pesticides and Herbicides

Our municipal water treatment facilities do not remove VOC’s (volatile organic compounds), and there are currently more than 60,000 of them in existence, most of which are man-made synthetic chemicals. According to Ralph Nader Research Institute, “U.S. drinking water contains more than 2,100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer.”

The use of pesticides and herbicides has become so excessive that they are now commonly found in household tap water and bottled waters with alarming frequency. Many pesticides and herbicides are known, suspected or probable carcinogens. As stated in a recent report from the National Cancer Institute to the surgeon general, “No level of exposure to a chemical carcinogen should be considered toxicologically insignificant for humans.”

Protect yourself and your family from these harmful chemicals and contaminants and more with a drinking water prefilter, and either a shower filter or whole house filter today. Visit www.chansonwater.com for more information.

New Years Detox

Since overeating during the holidays has become commonplace and even “tradition”, most people naturally look to the new year as a fresh start and thus make resolutions to lose weight, quit bad habits like smoking, and start going to the gym.

Goal-setting/planning is the first step towards making positive changes for your health and we recommend that you consider a detox program to kick off the new year. A detox program can aid your body’s natural cleaning process by releasing excess toxins and wastes, improving circulation, and replenishing your supply of alkaline minerals.

There are many different detox methods that you can implement as well as time periods you can choose to do them for. We recommend that you consider the following suggestions and select the methods and time periods you feel are most realistic for you. Obviously the more methods you implement and the longer you do them for, the better your results may be, however taking on too much at once could be counterproductive if you fail to stick with them. We have heard of cleanses lasting anywhere from three days to three months, and people changing their diets for a lifetime or doing one-day-a-week fasts indefinitely.

A detox program can benefit virtually everyone, however if you have a health condition or are pregnant or nursing, you should discuss with your physician before starting any new eating or lifestyle program.

Here are some methods to naturally cleanse and detox your system:

Juice fasts

Fresh juice fasts (especially those high in greens) are a popular way to cleanse and alkalize the body. You can try starting every day with a glass of fresh juice, replace one meal a day with juice, or go all out and drink nothing but juice for weeks or months as Joe Cross did and inspired many others to do in the film “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.” We recommend cucumber-pear and kale-green apple as easy and cleansing duos, but keep in mind that the act of juicing even the most alkaline of fruits and vegetables creates a mildly acidic juice, therefore we recommed that you offset the acidity by diluting with 9.5 Chanson alkaline ionized water. You can juice your own if you own a juicer, or there are companies on the internet that you can order from which will deliver fresh juice to your door daily for the duration of your cleanse.

Hydrate with alkaline ionized water

Drinking Chanson alkaline ionized water is essential throughout any detox program because it helps to flush out the many toxins that will be stirred up and eliminated from fat stores and organs in your body like your lymphatic system and your kidneys. Ionized water is microclustered which means it penetrates cells deeper than traditional water and can thus flush them out more effectively. A Chanson water ionizer is a wonderful investment for overall day-to-day health, not just during a detox. You can also try one day a week “water fasts” where you drink nothing but Chanson ionized water to cleanse your system.

Liquid feasts

One of the reasons juice and water fasts are so effective is because they give your body a break from having to work so hard to break down your food for digestion. Therefore you can also try a liquid diet of blending or pureeing your food if you wish to consume more than just juice or water. Soups and smoothies are examples of liquid feast “dishes” you can try and are recommended by Dr. Robert O. Young in his book “The pH Miracle for Weight Loss.”

Cut the crap

When we consume unnatural foods, they can leave behind a dense residue in our cells, which can turn into excess weight, body odor, wrinkles, cellulite and premature aging. Therefore, sugar, artificial sweeteners, animal products, processed foods, and fried foods should be eliminated from your diet during a detox and reduced in general for overall health. For example, just because coffee, alcohol, milk and sodas are liquids does not mean that they are acceptable for a liquid feast. Likewise, ordering “fresh juice” off of a Jamba Juice menu is not going to have the desired effect due to the excess sugar their smoothies contain. Dairy products clog your system and are acidifying, so avoid yogurt also.

Eat raw

If you choose to incorporate some solid foods into your diet, then you should rely heavily on raw alkaline fruits and vegetables as snacks, starters and even meals. Raw foods are more nutrient-dense than cooked foods and their negative ionic charge is the opposite of the positive ionic charge of toxins in our cells. The fiber found in fruits and vegetables will also help with elimination as well. Consider munching on carrot, celery and bell pepper sticks dipped in hummus, salads with oil-based dressings, and fruits dipped in almond butter.

Colonics

According to Dr. Norman Walker, author of “Colon Health: The Key to a Vibrant Life”: “The elimination of undigested food and other waste products is equally important as the proper digestion and assimilation of food…the very best diets can be no better than the very worst if the sewage system of the colon is clogged with a collection of waste and corruption.” A colonic is a safe and effective method for cleansing the bowels and can be performed by a professional or done in the comfort of your own home with the use of a colema board as often as once a month. Without them, buildup in the bowels can lead to prevention of the absorption of water and nutrients, constipation, growth of harmful bacteria and yeast and autointoxication (when toxins are absorbed into the bloodstream through the colon wall).

Go green

While you’re working hard to watch what goes into and comes out of your body, don’t forget to keep an eye on the toxins you may be exposing yourself to externally. Virtually all chemical-based household cleaners and many personal beauty products like shampoos, deodorants and toothpastes are acidifying to the body and contain known carcinogens. Chanson ionized acidic water–the byproduct of a water ionizer–is an all-natural alternative to everything from mouthwash and facial toner to Windex and Lysol.

Exercise–the alkaline way

“Instead of hard exercise (which creates lactic acid), one should practice traditional Asian soft-style exercises such as yoga, Tai Chi, and Chi Gung on a daily basis throughout the duration of any detox program” according to Daniel Reid, author of “The Tao of Detox.” Don’t have the time and/or desire to learn traditional Asian exercises? Rebounding on a mini-trampoline can dramatically improve lymph flow while exercising every cell in the body, and walking, stretching and aerobic exercise also works well.

Pledge to be stress-free

When stress hormones are released into the system in large amounts, toxins are created and can slow down the detoxification enzymes in the liver. Negative emotions are also very damaging and should be minimized. Dr. Young has seen negative emotions have a more damaging effect on one’s alkalinity than the worst of foods, and world-renowned photographer Dr. Masaru Emoto has documented the effects of negative words on water crystals with pictures (this is important considering that we are about 70% water!)

Practice hydrotherapy

To increase circulation and help flush out toxins, try alternating a very hot shower for five minutes, with cold water for 30 seconds, for a series of three times in a row before wrapping in a towel and getting into bed for 30 minutes. But don’t try this before installing a Chanson Spa Shower Filter, which filters harmful chlorines and chloramines from the water which would otherwise be absorbed by your skin and lungs.

Sweat it out

One way toxins are released from the body is through perspiration, which is why most spas offer saunas and steam rooms. Infrared saunas are preferred as they can cause you to perspire more than twice as much, and if you are going to be using a steam room or wet sauna make sure it is using filtered water so that you are not inhaling the contaminants found in tap water.

Breathe deeply

“Deep breathing greatly enhances oxygenation of the blood and tissues, which helps neutralize acidosis and maintains a healthy alkaline environment inside the body” according to Reid. One of the main ways to move the lymph system is through breathing deeply, so try focusing on your breathing several times throughout the day.

Dry skin brushing

To increase lymph flow, you can use a natural bristle brush on dry skin by brushing in circular motions towards the heart. This will help your lymph system rid itself of the toxins that collect in the lymph glands and keep  the pores of the skin open.

We hope that you will find these detox suggestions helpful and will try to implement one or more of them this new year for better health.

Importance of Filtering Chlorine Out of Shower Water

Did you know that during the course of one ten minute shower, your body will absorb as much chlorine as if you were to drink eight 8-oz. glasses of the same water?

Hot showers cause chlorine to turn into a vapor we inhale. At the same time, our pores dilate from the heat and are able to absorb more chlorine through our skin.

According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Breathing small amounts of chlorine for short periods of time adversely affects the human respiratory system. Effects range from coughing and chest pain to water retention in the lungs. Chlorine irritates the skin, the eyes, and the respiratory system.”

And yet, chlorine has been used to disinfect our tap water since 1908.

Dr. Zoltan P. Rona, author of The Joy of Health and Return to the Joy of Health and past president of the Canadian Holistic Medical Association states:

“Numerous scientific studies report that chlorinated tap water is a skin irritant and can be associated with rashes like eczema. Chlorinated water contains chemical compounds called trihalomethanes which are carcinogens resulting from the combination of chlorine with compounds in water. These chemicals, also known as organochlorides, do not degrade very well and are generally stored in the fatty tissues of the body (breast, other fatty areas, mother’s milk, blood and semen). Organochlorides can cause mutations by altering DNA, suppress immune system function and interfere with the natural controls of cell growth. Anything you can do to filter tap and shower water that eliminates or minimizes chlorine would certainly be helpful and possibly curative for some immune system problems. The use of water filtration devices is increasingly popular and affordable. Discuss their use with your health care practitioner.”

In her book, Be Perfectly Healthy, Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy explains that chlorine by-products have been linked to cancer, heart disease, and reproductive disorders and that these by-products generate free radicals which destroy the good bacteria in our bodies.

Studies have also shown that chlorine destroys vitamin E, as well as polyunsaturated fatty acids, each vital to healthy skin, and have linked chlorine to asthma aggravation.
