Are You Emotionally Healthy?

According to the American Psychological Association, happy people are more likely to work toward goals, find the resources they need, and attract others with their energy and optimism.

Negativity is a vicious cycle that holds us back from happiness and success. Letting go of negativity and developing healthy emotional habits can go a long way in your overall level of contentment, happiness, and success in life, love, and career.

Here are five ways to become emotionally healthy:

1. Practice self love and self care

It’s easy to overlook our basic needs, especially while caring for children, pets, and/or a spouse or loved one. But studies show that taking time for ourselves can go a long way in alleviating stress and achieving happiness. Whether it’s taking time to get a therapeutic massage, turning off your cell phone for an evening to curl up with a good book, or preparing a healthy meal and eating it slowly, you should aim to do at least one enjoyable thing for yourself daily. Making yourself and your needs a priority signals to the brain that you are loved and important.

2. Try using positive affirmations

There is lot of power in positivity, and it’s more than just wishful thinking. By reciting or chanting a positive affirmation or several each day you are training your mind to think positive thoughts. Positive affirmations such as “I love and respect myself” also reinforce self-love, but you can say anything you are thinking or feeling or want to think, feel or believe such as “I am living my truth,” “I have abundance in my life,” or “I welcome joy and happiness.” Try to avoid saying things that are in the wanting/lacking category (i.e. “I want to feel desired”) vs. acting as if you already have it (i.e. “I am desired.”)

3. Practice setting goals and intentions

You’ve likely heard of The Law of Attraction, which states that like attracts like and that in order to get what we want in life we have to focus on it instead of what we don’t want. Writing down your goals and setting positive intentions is a powerful way to  improve your mental, emotional, and spiritual well being. One key to attracting what you want is to be thankful for what you have, so spending a few minutes a day thanking your creator or the universe for what you have already been blessed with can go a long way.

4. Change your way of thinking

Studies show that those who were given a death sentence by their doctor tended to die right on the appointed schedule, because our minds are powerful tools. If you believe something, you can make it come true regardless of if it’s a positive or negative belief. Those who trained their minds to reject a dooming diagnosis and took their health into their own hands managed to live longer than those who accepted their fate. So just because someone–including yourself–introduces a limiting belief (i.e. I’ll never be good enough,” “I don’t have what it takes to run that race”) does not make it true. Overcoming negative beliefs and embracing a new reality (“I am good enough,” “I do have what it takes…”) can make all the difference.

5. Let go of grudges, unhealthy habits and trapped emotions

We are all carrying around emotional baggage from past hurts and experiences, often stemming from childhood. This emotional baggage can unconsciously weigh on our day to day lives and affect many of our decisions, such as whether or not we choose to go to the gym or stick to our diets. This is because healthy habits are based on a healthy, focused and determined attitude, while unhealthy habits are rooted in feelings of low self-worth. By letting go of grudges and trapped emotions, you can pave the way for overcoming unhealthy habits one by one and replacing them with healthier counterparts.

Do these steps sound challenging to you?

Keep in mind that a well hydrated brain is able to overcome these mental obstacles and function on a higher level than a dehydrated brain. We recommend drinking a minimum of half your body weight in ounces of ionized alkaline water from a Chanson electric water ionizer daily for optimal hydration.

Remember, becoming emotionally healthy is an important part of overall health and wellness, because a negative mindset can actually hinder all aspects of your health.
