6 Easy Ways to Improve Your Indoor Air Quality

Because most homes are filled with toxic products like carpet, rugs, furniture and plastics, indoor air can be ten times more polluted than the outdoors. In fact, women who work from home have a higher risk of breast cancer than those who don’t, due to their increased exposure.

Other ailments caused by poor air quality include headaches, fatigue, wheezing, allergies, asthma and depression. Since most of our lives are spent indoors it is important to properly ventilate and to avoid buying non-organic fabrics and products and using chemicals inside the home.

The following is a list of six suggestions for easy ways you can improve your indoor air quality:

1. Salt Crystal Lamps

You may have seen salt crystal lamps at the street fair or in an energy healing shop and wondered what they were all about. They work by heating the salt with a low wattage bulb and releasing salt crystals into the air which attach to impurities, weighing them down so they cannot circulate and you do not breathe them in. It will also neutralize pollutants and toxins, and offers light therapy.

2. Beeswax Candles

Commercial candles are loaded with artificial colors and fragrances and are usually made with paraffin wax. Like commercial air fresheners, those types of candles pollute the air. A better alternative that can not only fragrance your home but clean the air as well are 100% natural beeswax candles (either unscented or scented with natural essential oils). Beeswax candles emit negative ions which clean the air and last five times longer than other candles.

3. House Plants

NASA scientists have found that certain houseplants such as spider plants, English ivy, and bamboo palms can remove up to 87% of toxic indoor air particles. Plants naturally filter the air and can neutralize fumes like carbon monoxide and cigarette smoke. Rooms with plants are said to contain half the amount of airborne microbes as rooms without plants.

4. Water Fountain

Flowing water releases negative ions into the air which attach themselves to air pollutants and drag them down so you cannot breathe them in. Researchers say that water fountains are as effective at cleaning the air as a HEPA filter. We recommend filling your water fountain with low level ionized alkaline water, and cleaning with acidic water to break down any mineral buildup or germs. Both waters are available from a Chanson water ionizer.

5. Air Filter/Purifier

There are many air filters/purifiers on the market. They are electric units which suck in and trap microbes in their disposable filters, much like a water filter. Depending on the size of your home, you may need several units, and the filters will need occasional changing.

6. Chanson Miracle Sanitizer

The new portable Chanson Miracle Sanitizer is a revolutionary device that sanitizes air, liquids and fabrics. It works by dispensing activated oxygen which binds with and eliminates pollutants, germs, bacteria, mold, fungi and foul odors. You can use it for everything from sanitizing mattresses and cell phones to creating non-toxic cleaning solutions to removing foul odors from your home rather than covering them up with a toxic air freshener. Unlike an air filter/purifier, there are no filters to replace.

6 Natural Remedies for Allergies

Spring has sprung and with it, for many, comes annoying and sometimes even debilitating seasonal allergies.

Allergies, in general are the result of an erroneous immune system which builds up antibodies against normally harmless substances. Japanese doctors believe that allergies including asthma are actually an immune disorder is caused by acidosis. Acidosis is the state of being too acidic and is caused by an inverted way of eating and living. The sad truth is that most Americans are over-acidic.

Both prescription and over-the-counter allergy medications are acidifying to the body, which further exacerbates the problem by adding to your body’s toxic load. Fortunately there are natural and homeopathic remedies that you can try instead.

#1 Drink ionized alkaline water

Drinking ionized alkaline water may help alleviate and even reverse allergies due to its high pH and detoxification properties.

Bob McCauley, author of The Miraculous Properties of Ionized Water explains that ionized alkaline water flushes accumulated pollen, mold and chemical substances from the body. You can make your own ionized alkaline water at home with a water ionizer. If you cannot afford a water ionizer, you can try upping your daily water intake to a minimum of half your body weight in ounces but your results will not be as extreme. This is because ionized water is believed by Japanese scientists to be microclustered, and thus better able to penetrate your cells and flush out the allergens than standard water.

#2 Reduce or eliminate intake of mucus-causing foods

Mucus locks allergens into the tissue where they become deeply embedded. Mucus is caused by dairy, rice, wheat and processed foods which contain gluten.  In addition, the absorption of undigested proteins is a major cause of allergies. By reducing your intake of these foods you can lessen and possibly even eliminate your allergies.

#3 Eat more alkaline foods

According to Dr. Robert O. Young, author of The pH Miracle series, “Allergies are 100% reversible with an alkaline diet and lifestyle.” He goes on to say that, “When you alkalize and exercise, beginning with an organic green drinks loaded with chlorophyll and purified, ionized water from a quality water machine/water ionizer, these allergies will begin to subside. This is because these products introduce oxygenating and alkalizing elements into your body—helping to balance the conditions that may lead to hyper-sensitivities.” Dr. Young recommends an 80% alkaline/20% acidic diet rich in whole plant-based foods like avocado, kale, spinach, and broccoli.

#4 Filter your tap water

A recent study reported by ABC News found a link between pesticides in tap water and food allergies. Filtering your tap water is a very important step to preserving your health. Even if you do not drink tap water, chemicals and contaminants can be absorbed through your skin if you are not using a whole house and/or shower filter. You should also consider a Chanson drinking water pre-filter if you cook with tap water.

#5 Try homeopathic and home remedies

There are many homeopathic allergy remedies on the market which are all great alternatives to acidic prescription medications. There are also some methods you can try yourself at home. These include irrigating with a simple saline solution, sleeping in a room with a humidifier (for pet allergies) or dehumidifier (for pollen allergies), drinking peppermint tea, and breathing steam.

#6 Reduce household toxins

Using chemical cleaners and commercial body and beauty products also adds to your body’s toxic load. By replacing many toxic products with ionized acidic water from a Chanson water ionizer, your immune system will be stronger and thus better able to ward off allergens. You can also try cleaning with natural products like baking soda, vinegar, and lemon juice, and beautifying with coconut oil, apple cider vinegar and aloe vera.

7 Healthy Habits That Can Change Your Life

Leo Babauta of Zen Habits teaches that you can turn anything into a habit, and that it’s important to conquer one habit at a time instead of getting burned out by trying to do a whole lifestyle shift at once. He says that it’s important to start small, and gives the example of flossing saying that instead of committing to flossing daily, commit to flossing ONE tooth. Surely once you’ve started you will find yourself flossing the rest of them, and the key is to set goals so ridiculously small that you can’t imagine not doing them.
With this in mind, we compiled the following list of healthy habits. We recommend that you pick the one that sounds the least challenging to you, start conquering it today, and then move on to the next habit in 3-4 weeks or so.
Here are 7 healthy habits that can change your life:
1. Hydrate properly
Most of us simply do not drink enough water to keep our body adequately hydrated. The new recommendation is to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water daily, and more if you live in a hot climate or are extremely active. Work your way up to this goal one day at a time. For example, if your target is to drink 80 ounces per day and you are currently only drinking 16 ounces, add another glass today, two tomorrow, and so on until you reach your goal. Ionized alkaline water from a water ionizer has been found to hydrate up to six times better than standard water and does not leave a bloated or waterlogged feeling.
2. Get juicing
Green juices and smoothies made with fruits and vegetables like kale, spinach, avocado, cucumber and celery are extremely alkalizing and provide a wonderful boost to your immune system. If you aim to make one or two green juices or smoothies per day, you might start by making one a week, then two, and so on. Or you might try a 30 day challenge where you drink one every single day. By the end of the month you’ll be feeling so great and the habit will be so ingrained that you won’t want to stop!
3. Cut the crap
Do you eat a donut for breakfast every morning or a sugary dessert every night? Identify which items on your shopping list are the least healthy (anything processed and prepackaged is a good place to start) and then slowly stop buying them. So for example you could say goodbye to potato chips this week, cookies next week, and so on. If your pantry isn’t stocked with these unhealthy foods then you will be less likely to eat them!
4. Nourish your body with alkaline foods
If the idea of cutting the crap sounds too daunting, you can do the opposite and crowd out the bad with the good. Try adding one new alkaline food to your shopping cart each week or start eating one salad a day. As you start to eat more alkaline foods your taste buds will change and you will eventually no longer crave the processed crap.
5. Get Moving
Of course exercise is an integral part of health and a surefire way to boost your mood. Aim to do alkaline exercises like walking, yoga, Pilates, jogging, rebounding and stretching at least three times a week.
6. Switch to natural products
Commercial beauty products and cleaners contain toxic ingredients that wreak havoc on your health. But fortunately natural alternatives are available and you can slowly re-stock your medicine cabinet and cleaning supply closet when you develop the habit of reading labels. Try buying a fluoride-free toothpaste this week and an aluminum-free deodorant the next. A water ionizer will produce multipurpose low pH acid water that can replace everything from facial toner and hand sanitizer to Windex and Lysol.
7. Cut back on meat and dairy
Even if you’re not ready or never intend to become vegan or vegetarian, if you are eating large amounts of meat and/or dairy you can see health benefits like fewer allergies and increased energy by cutting back. Try implementing Meatless Mondays or replacing your cow’s milk with organic soy, almond or coconut milk.
Which habit will you begin implementing today? Share in the comments!

Are You at Risk for a Mineral Deficiency?

Did you know that 4 out of 5 Americans are mineral deficient?

It’s no wonder–with our fast food lifestyles and the depletion of minerals in our agriculture lands, we are by and large an overfed and undernourished nation.

Minerals support body cells and structures and work to regulate many body processes such as conducting electricity in our nervous system. In fact, every cell in the body needs calcium and magnesium to function properly.

The pH of our blood must remain at about 7.365 at all times in order to live. When we eat, drink and perform acidic functions like rigorous exercise, our body is forced to rob itself of alkaline minerals in order to neutralize the acidity and keep us alive. But if we keep our alkaline reserves up through a healthy plant-based diet and adequate mineral intake, our body does not need to steal minerals from our bones and organs.

But taking minerals and supplements to bridge the gap isn’t the best solution, because many minerals are not readily absorbable in pill form, and certain substances can block the absorbency when supplements are taken together.

We’ve been told all of our lives that milk is a great source of calcium and promotes bone health, but this is a myth. While milk does have an abundance of calcium, it also contains phosphorus which blocks the absorption of calcium, and studies show that those who drink large quantities of cow’s milk actually have weaker bone health!

The seven macrominerals–minerals needed in large quantities–are calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, potassium, sulfur and phosphorus. Trace minerals like iron and zinc are needed in smaller quantities.

While you may get a sufficient amount of minerals from a well balanced diet of foods like kale, almonds, avocados, spinach, broccoli, organic soy products, collard greens, brown rice and lentils, an easier and more efficient solution is to drink mineral-rich water that has been ionized. It is believed that the body can absorb calcium and magnesium 30% easier and faster from water  than from food or supplements.

70% of Americans have hard water, which is rich in alkaline minerals but difficult for the body to absorb. While reverse osmosis systems strip the water of all minerals, water ionizers use the process of electrolysis to make the naturally occurring minerals in tap water become bio-available. If you are part of the 30% of Americans who have soft water, or if you already have a reverse osmosis system installed, you can benefit from a mineral remineralizer which will add powdered calcium and magnesium to your water.

Don’t be a victim of mineral deficiency. Protect your health and the health of your family with a Chanson water ionizer and (if needed) an Inline Mineral Remineralizer. You simply cannot get the same results from taking supplements or drinking bottled mineral water.
