This is the 12th installment of our alkaline foods series where we feature a food from A-Z, sharing the benefits of the food along with suggested recipes to try!
L is for Lemons & Limes
Lemons and limes offer many of the same health benefits, and many people are surprised to learn that they are alkaline-forming to the body considering their acidic nature. The reason is because they contain very little sugar and thus the body does not have to use alkaline minerals to process them, resulting in an alkalizing effect once consumed. They are rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin B, phosphorous, proteins, and carbohydrates.
Lemons and limes promote health in many ways. They:
- Detoxify, purify and cleanse
- Aid in digestion
- Have antioxidant and anti-cancer properties
- Helps prevent diabetes
- May lower blood pressure and purify the blood
- Help dilute uric acid
- Help reduce phlegm
- Fight constipation
- Can reduce body temperature
- Help stop internal bleeding
- Soothe burns
- Aid in weight loss
