Top 6 Anti-Aging Tips

We all want to look and feel younger. Our society is beauty-obsessed, and Americans spend billions of dollars on anti-aging products each year. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Here are six things you can do to slow down and in some cases even reverse the signs of aging naturally:

1. Get enough sleep

When you sleep your body releases growth hormone which stimulates cell turnover, so a lack of sleep can accelerate aging and stress the body. Sleep research shows that just one week of sleep deprivation alters hormone levels and the capacity to metabolize carbohydrates. Aim to get 7-9 hours of sleep a night.

2. Drink ionized alkaline water

According to dermatologist Dr. Nicholas Perricone, author of The Perricone Perscription, “If you have any doubts about the effect of water intake on our skin, just put a grape and a raisin side by side…If you do not drink water, your organs and cells cannot function. How can your skin be soft and plumped up if you refuse the elixir of life?”

Alkaline ionized water from a water ionizer is up to six times more hydrating than conventional water, can literally plump cells up to twice their size, and contains three times more antioxidants than a glass of OJ! Aim to drink a minimum of half your body weight in ounces of alkaline ionized water daily.

3. Eat a plant-based diet

“Food is much more than just a life-giving and life sustaining substance–it is our single most powerful anti aging tool. The choices we make daily–or even hourly–directly influence our physical and mental states, the number of wrinkles, and the amount of sagging in our faces, our overall muscle and body tone, the condition of our internal organs, our brain and memory power, and our mental and emotional states,” Dr. Perricone says.

Aim to eat a plant-based diet chock full of anitoxidant rich foods like beans, berries, apples, and nuts as well as alkaline non-sweet fruits and vegetables like avocado, spinach, kale, cucumber and broccoli. Reduce or eliminate your consumption of free-radical forming acidic foods like meat, dairy, processed foods and sweets.

4. Reduce your exposure to toxins

Our bodies are assaulted with more toxins in one day than our ancestors faced in a lifetime, and the average women applies 535 chemicals to her skin daily. Choose natural skin care products and cleaners, open windows as often as possible and invest in an air purifier and water ionizer. The byproduct that water ionizers produce is ionized acidic water which acts as a multipurpose cleaner and body care product that will save you money.

5. Stress less

Research shows that stress speeds the aging process on a cellular level by harming DNA. According to cell and molecular biologist Elizabeth Blackburn and health psychologist Elissa Epel, chronic stress speeds up the rate at which our cells age by 10 years or more. Try not to get upset over small things, and control unavoidable stress with yoga, meditation, or deep breathing.

6. Use natural sunscreen

We’ve all heard that the sun can wreak havoc on our skin and lead to skin cancer, and therefore we shouldn’t expose ourselves to the sun’s rays without sunblock. But what many people don’t know is that the commercial sunblocks and sunscreens themselves contain toxic ingredients that can lead to cancer and other health issues! Better to shell out the extra few bucks for natural, mineral-based sunscreens. Also, try to avoid being outdoors when the sun is at its brightest: between 10 am and 4 pm.

Reduce Toxicity in Your Home With These 5 All Natural Cleaners

Commercial cleaning products can be quite costly. Not only financially but to your health and to the environment.

You may not think that adding a $4 bottle of cleaner to your shopping cart is a big expense, but it’s estimated that the average American family spends more than $400 a year on household cleaning products.

Commercial cleaning products contain many toxic chemicals that can cause damage and irritation to the eyes, skin, liver, lungs, nose, throat, etc. In fact, over 100 chemicals commonly found in homes have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer, psychological abnormalities, skin reactions, headaches, depression, joint pain, chronic fatigue, chest pains, dizziness, loss of sleep, and asthma.

Instead of harmful chemical cleaners try these five all natural alternatives:

1. Baking Soda – Acts as an all-purpose cleaner, deodorizer, water softener, and scour. You can add a small amount to a damp sponge or create a soft scrub-like paste by mixing with water and use to clean floors, tiles, tubs, glass, ovens, microwaves, coffee and tea pots, to shine stainless steel and silver, and to remove crayon marks from walls and painted furniture. You can also make an all-natural drain cleaner/declogger by pouring baking soda and white vinegar down the drain, followed by boiling water.

2. White Vinegar – Cuts grease, removes mildew, odors, some stains and wax build-up and can disinfect, deodorize, and de-gunk just about everything from shower curtains to sofa cushions. It also acts as a fabric softener, static reducer, mildew-inhibitor and all-natural weed killer. Combine with water in a spray bottle to wash windows and glass and to remove carpet stains.

3. Lemons – Lemon juice acts as an antiseptic effective against mold, germs and bacteria that can be used to clean and disinfect cutting boards. It is an effective degreaser that can be mixed in a spray bottle with water and spritzed on the stove, countertops and appliances. You can also create a paste by mixing with lemon juice with table salt and use to remove tarnish from copper and brass.

4. Cornstarch – Can be used to clean windows, remove grease stains, polish furniture and silver, and freshen carpet and rugs. You can also make your own spray starch to iron with by mixing corn starch with water in a spray bottle.

5. Acidic Water – Acidic water from a Chanson water ionizer has been 3rd party lab tested to kill E.coli and staph bacteria on contact when made at 2.7 pH. Chanson ionized acidic water can be used to clean and disinfect countertops, cutting boards, windows, doorknobs, toilets, sinks, etc. In fact, it works so well that the LA Times reported that hotel maids have taken to cleaning with it, and it is also an effective bug killer and stain remover.

Unlike the other cleaners listed above, acidic water does not leave a residue or lingering odor, will not harm or irritate skin and eyes, and is quick and easy to use. Just fill a spray bottle and spritz away! It can replace up to 50% of household cleaners on its own, saving you thousands in the long run. Visit for more information.

Alkaline Recipe: Stuffed Eggplant

Stuffed Eggplant

Serves 2

  • 1 large eggplant (look for those with shallow grooves on the bottom, they have less seeds and are not as bitter)
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 8 oz. can diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 8 oz. can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • Sea salt, pepper, cayenne pepper and thyme to taste
  • Olive oil for sautéeing

Directions: Soak all produce in 8.0-8.5 pH Chanson alkaline ionized water for 10 minutes. Cut eggplant in half lengthwise, remove pulp and set aside, leaving a scooped-shell. Place the eggplant shells cut-side down and cook for about five minutes in a large skillet coated with olive oil. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. With tongs, transfer shells into a baking dish face up. Add more olive oil to skillet and sautée onions and garlic for 2 minutes over medium heat. Add coarsely chopped eggplant pulp and remaining ingredients and cook over medium-high heat until the majority of the moisture evaporates and you are left with a stew-like mixture. Next, stuff the eggplant shells with the mixture, and bake for 15 minutes.

10 Reasons to Go Veg

There are three main reasons that people choose to adopt a plant-based diet: their health, the health of our planet, and out of compassion for animals. As it stands, the majority of Americans are overfed, overweight and undernourished.

In the words of Albert Einstein, “Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.”

10 Reasons to Go Veg

1. You reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc.

Research indicates that populations who consume large amounts of plant-derived foods have lower incidences of several types of cancer. On the other hand, the people who eat the most animal protein have the most heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

According to Dr. T. Colin Campbell, author of The China Study: “The evidence now amassed from researchers around the world shows that the same diet that is good for the prevention of cancer is also good for the prevention of heart disease as well as obesity, diabetes, cataracts, macular degeneration, Alzheimer’s, cognitive dysfunction, M.S., osteoporosis and other diseases. Furthermore (a whole foods, plant-based) diet can only benefit everyone, regardless of his or her genes or personal dispositions.”

2. Achieving proper acid-alkaline balance for overall health is much easier

“Vegetarians, and in particular vegans, are more likely to have a better acid-alkaline balance and increased protection against degenerative diseases than meat-eaters…All body tissue has different levels of acidity and alkalinity but, overall, it functions best in a mildly alkaline state. Prolonged acidity within the body is pro-cancerous, and the typical Western diet creates overacidity,” according to Ian Marber and Vicki Edgson, authors of The Food Doctor.

In the words of Dr. Gabriel Cousens, “When you create a healthy pH (in your body), you create a significantly more disease-resistant body…a properly alkalinized person optimizes all mental and physical functions.” So not only will you be less prone to disease, but you’ll be able to function at optimal levels.

3. Vegetarians live longer and weigh less

The longest-living people in the world–the Hunza, the Vilcabama, the Abkhasia and the Okinawa people–eat a largely vegetarian diet using freshly picked organically grown fruit and vegetables. Many also drink alkaline ionized water from uncontaminated fresh-flowing rivers and streams. Studies have shown that vegetarians live about seven years longer than non-vegetarians, with vegans living about 15 years longer than meat eaters. Additionally, a 2009 study by Oxford researcher Tim Key found that vegetarians and vegans had body weights 3-20% lower than meat eaters.

4. Vegetarians are stronger and have lower cholesterol

In more than 10 studies, non-athletic vegetarians had two to three times more endurance than meat-eating athletes, and the best athletes in the ancient Greek Olympics consumed a plant-based diet. The myth that people need animal protein to build muscle is completely false.

According to Dr. Howard Murad, “There are many benefits to eating vegetable protein food as opposed to animal sources of protein. Vegetable proteins contain no cholesterol or saturated fat and in many cases also provide a good source of dietary fiber.” The cholesterol levels for vegetarians is about 14% lower than meat eaters, and vegans consume no cholesterol whatsoever.

5. It will save you money

By replacing meat, chicken and fish with vegetables and fruits, it is estimated that your food bill will be reduced by an average of $4,000 a year. Just think of all the things you could do with the extra income. And that’s just for one person, what if you could get everyone in your household to follow your healthy eating habits?

6. It’s better for the environment

The water and carbon footprint of a meat-eating Prius owner is larger than that of a vegetarian who drives a Hummer.

Each year, our nation’s factory farms collectively produce two billion tons of manure–a substance that’s rated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as one of the country’s top 10 pollutants. And that is not even taking in to account the amount of methane gas released by cows, pigs and poultry, the ammonia gases from urine, the poisonous gases that emanate from manure lagoons, the toxic chemicals from pesticides, and exhaust from farm equipment used to raise feed for animals.

It takes 1,857 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef, and for every hamburger made from imported beef the equivalent of a small kitchen worth of rainforest is destroyed forever.

7. It’s the humane thing to do

Every year in the United States, more than nine billion animals are slaughtered for food while millions more die of stress, suffocation, injuries, or disease in the food industry.

In the words of Paul McCartney: “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.” It is believed that vegetarians and vegans spare the lives of 100 animals a year. Remember that you have a choice every time you pick up your fork at mealtime, order off a menu, or fill your shopping cart.
8. It’s better for our children

“Putting children on a plant-based diet could reduce teen pregnancy by delaying the start of menstruation by an average of 4-6 years,” according to Dr. Campbell.

We teach our children not to drink, smoke or abuse drugs and to practice safe sex, but so long as we are providing them with an abundance of processed foods and sodas, we are doing nothing to prolong or enrich their health, but rather setting them up for a lifetime of dehabilitating illnesses, prescription drugs and medical bills. 16-33% percent of children and adolescents are obese, and unhealthy weight gain due to poor diet and lack of exercise is responsible for over 300,000 deaths each year.

9. It helps menopausal women with the change

Hormone levels aren’t as elevated in women who eat a plant-based diet than those who don’t. This is especially helpful during menopause, as the crash isn’t as hard for vegetarians and vegans as they are for meateaters.

10. We were not evolved to eat meat

“Humans are designed to be vegetarian, and our bodies will never work their best if we keep forcing them to do something they are not equipped to handle,” according to Dr. Robert O. Young, author of “The pH Miracle.”

Our teeth, the length of our digestive tract, and the strength of our stomach acid is all better suited to a plant-based diet than meat. In fact, when humans consume meat it rots in their digestive tract because it remains in there for too long and is not properly broken down.

In Chanson Water’s continued effort to promote health, we encourage a plant-based diet by offering “Meatless Monday” recipes every week.

If the idea of quitting meat cold-turkey is too challenging for you, try going meatless for one day or even just one meal a day and work your way up. For every person who eats one less hamburger each week for a year it would be equivalent to taking one car off the road for 320 miles.

And don’t forget to hydrate with Chanson alkaline ionized water. According to Ray Kurzwell and Dr. Terry Grossman, authors of Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough to Live Forever, “Most people are already too acidic from eating excess meat, simple carbohydrates, and sugar. Alkalinizing water is a very effective step to bring this into balance.”
