9 Ways to Alkalize Your Beauty Routine

The average women applies a whopping 535 acidic chemicals to her skin daily, 60% of which are absorbed into her bloodstream. Clearly, what we put on our body is almost as important to health as what we put in it.

Here are 9 ways to reduce your exposure to toxins by alkalizing your beauty routine:

1. Install a Shower Filter

Municipalities use chlorine and chloramines to sanitize our water supply, but those chemicals can wreak havoc on your health when consumed, absorbed, or inhaled as a steam. Even just a 10-minute shower can cause you to absorb more chlorine than if you drank 64 ounces of the same water. Installing a Chanson Spa Shower Filter is a quick and easy way to reduce your exposure to chlorine, and will soften and energize your water in the process, creating softer, shinier hair and smoother skin.

2. Natural Soap/Shower Gel, Shampoo/Conditioner

Most body washes and shampoos contain sulfites and other chemicals. Liquid castile soap is a safe, paraben and sulfite-free gentle cleanser that can be used on the body and hair. You can also try forgoing conditioner and just rinsing hair with ionized acidic water from a Chanson ionizer for an all-natural shine.

3. Fluoride-Free Toothpaste and Alcohol-Free Mouthwash

Fluoride is slightly more toxic than lead, and if ingested, a tube of fluoridated toothpaste could kill a small child. Try a fluoride-free toothpaste or make your own by mixing a blend of baking soda, peroxide and peppermint or spearmint essential oil (optional). Most mouthwashes are filled with alcohol but you can look for alcohol-free versions or make your own by adding a couple drops of peppermint or spearmint essential oil to a bottle of Chanson ionized acidic water.

4. Paraben-Free Moisturizer, Body Lotion

Parabens are common preservatives that have been linked to cancer and can cause allergies. Fortunately, many popular brands of moisturizers now offer paraben-free versions of their lotion formulas.

5. All-Natural Facial Toner, Aftershave

Most facial toners are also full of alcohol which is very drying to the skin. Chanson ionized acidic water is a wonderful all-natural facial toner, aftershave, and hand sanitizer, and you can even spray it on rashes, scrapes and bug bites to help the healing process. Make your own for pennies on the gallon with a Chanson water ionizer (prices start at $1,295) or try a 4 oz. bottle of our SkinBalance product for $19.95.

6. Natural Deodorant

Most deodorants on the market contain aluminum, which is easily absorbed into the bloodstream and considered to be a possible cause of Alzheimers disease. Look for aluminum-free varieties or try making your own.

7. Mineral Makeup

The average woman will eat nearly four pounds of lipstick in her lifetime, and an FDA study found lead in 100% of the lipsticks they tested. Consider mineral makeup for everything from eyeshadow to lipstick to reduce your exposure to these harmful toxins.

8. Natural Sunscreen/Sunblock

Commercial sunblocks and sunscreens contain a host of toxic ingredients that can lead to cancer and other health issues! Natural, mineral-based sunscreens that you can buy or make yourself are an alkaline alternative.

9. Natural Perfumes

Most perfumes on the market are synthetic and put in a base of alcohol. Seek out all-natural scents or try making your own by blending essential oils in a base of jojoba oil.

There is more than one way to make alkaline water, and we have created this infographic as a guide to explain the pros and cons of each method.

Ways to make alkaline water

Electric water ionizers are also the only method listed above that also makes ionized acidic water which is great for all-natural skin, body and hair care as well as household and industrial cleaning.

5 Ways to Conquer Your Sugar Cravings

The American Heart Association recommends that women limit their sugar intake to 6 teaspoons a day and men are allowed 9 teaspoons. But in reality we are consuming an average of 22 teaspoons a day, and just one soda exceeds the daily limit at over 9 teaspoons.

With excess sugar leading to a myriad of diseases and conditions like diabetes, cancer, heart disease, weight gain, premature aging and candida, its important that we try to limit our sugar intake as much as possible. Artificial sweeteners are not a solution as they often contain dangerous toxins that should be avoided.

So what is one to do when one of those pesky sugar cravings strike?

Here are our suggestions for conquering your sugar cravings:

1. Give Your Body What it Really Needs, Not What it Thinks it Needs

Studies show that when humans crave sweets, what we really need is chromium, sulfur, carbon, phosphorus, and tryptophan. Healthy foods like broccoli, grapes, dried beans, nuts,  legumes, fresh fruit, sweet potato, spinach, kale, cabbage, and calciferous vegetables contain those elements and should be snacked on when sugar cravings strike.

2. Drink Ionized Alkaline Water

Ionized alkaline water from an electric water ionizer contains an electric charge which creates a craving to drink more water. Additionally, prolonged use of ionized alkaline water can cause sweets to become too sweet for your taste, making them less appealing. Ionized alkaline water is also very detoxifying to the body and may help flush out Candida. By replacing one sugary beverage like soda for a glass of water, you will take in about 45 less grams of sugar.

3. Swap Your Sweetener

Stevia is an all-natural sweetener with a low glycemic index that is available in both powdered and liquid form. It actually offers some health benefits and is sweeter than sugar so a little can go a long way. It is a great alternative to white and brown sugar and artificial sweeteners.

4. Reduce Temptation

As with any diet, clearing the pantry of the unhealthy foods you are trying to avoid will reduce your chances of overindulging on sweets. Start reading labels and stop buying the sweets you know you shouldn’t be eating. Even non-sugary junk foods should be avoided as they can be addicting.

5. Keep Your Hormones in Check

Stress creates cortisol, which increases blood sugar levels and creates sugar cravings. Meditation can help keep sugar cravings at bay by reducing stress, and eating small frequent meals will keep blood sugar stable. Also, when your serotonin levels are stable, you are less likely to have cravings for sweets, so try boosting your serotonin levels with a low glycemic diet, daily exercise and plenty of sleep.

Is Your Water Filter Too Extreme, Too Minimal, Or Just Right?

Tap water is littered with a host of chemicals and contaminants, some of which are regulated by the government to be there such as chlorine and fluoride even though they are proven to be unhealthy.

Many studies have linked these chemicals to cancer and other health issues and have determined that drinking unfiltered tap water is not safe, but that filtering your tap water is in many cases a better alternative to bottled water.

The most common drinking water filters used by Americans today are reverse osmosis systems (an extreme solution) and short-term carbon pitcher or faucet filters (a minimal solution). Here we will discuss the pros and cons of each and offer solutions to help you achieve the best filtration possible.

Reverse Osmosis Systems (R/O)

PROS:

  • Removes virtually ALL impurities
  • Only needs to be changed about once a year

CONS:

  • Removes ALL alkaline minerals and nutrients
  • Renders water acidic, which leads to mineral deficiencies and creates an internal environment which is ideal for illness and disease to thrive
  • Cannot be used with a water ionizer without a remineralizer
  • Wastes approximately five gallons of water for every gallon produced
  • Limited on demand supply – may require a holding tank (which can grow mold inside)
  • Maintenance can be extensive

BETTER SOLUTION: If installing or utilizing a reverse osmosis system, you should also install a remineralizer, which puts alkaline minerals back into the water after everything is filtered out. The Chanson Super Reverse Osmosis System (no remineralizer needed) is a five stage system which is superior to a traditional three stage R/O system and wastes only two gallons of water per gallon produced.

BEST SOLUTION: Chanson also developed the Nano-Filtration System, which is a modified reverse osmosis system that removes most impurities while keeping the beneficial minerals in (without the need for a remineralizer) and wastes the least amount of water (one gallon per gallon produced). It also provides an unlimited on demand supply and does not require the use of a holding tank, although we offer optional tanks in order to speed up your water ionizer flow.

Short-Term Carbon Pitcher and Faucet Filters (like those sold by Brita® and PUR®)

PROS:

  • Cheap in the short-term
  • Convenient – can be picked up at local stores
  • Easy to change
  • Does not waste any water

CONS:

  • Does not even remotely begin to address all chemicals and contaminants found in tap water
  • While they cover up the smell and taste of chlorine, they don’t actually remove the chlorine itself which causes distress on the body
  • Needs to be changed frequently, and costs can add up to be more in the long run than investing in a more permanent system

BETTER SOLUTION: The Chanson C3 Prefilter addresses many, many more toxins, chemicals, and pollutants and the filters only need to be changed annually. If installed under the faucet, the drinking water is dispensed directly from the tap (no need for extra pieces to be added to the faucet or to have anything taking up space in your refrigerator).

BEST SOLUTION: The Chanson Nano-Filtration System is the ultimate drinking water filtration system that will remove the most contaminants while keeping adequate levels of beneficial alkaline minerals in. You get what you pay for, and the Nano is worth it!

7 Tips to Help You Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is the key to a healthy body.

Not only does adequate water intake aid in disease prevention, improve appearance, and increase energy levels, but it also benefits things like our mental and physical performance and memory.

Yet studies report that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated!

Your body loses approximately half its weight in ounces daily through normal everyday functions like perspiration, exhalation, urination and deification. Therefore we recommend that you drink a minimum of half of your body weight in ounces daily in order to replace the lost water and to prevent dehydration.

We realize that this can sound like a daunting amount, and you may need to work your way up, but we guarantee your body will thank you for it!

Here are 7 simple tips for increasing your daily water intake and staying hydrated this summer:

1. Switch to ionized alkaline water

Users report that ionized alkaline water (made with a water ionizer) does not leave a bloated or waterlogged feeling. We attribute this to the microclustering claim made by Japanese scientists that ionized alkaline water is able to deeper hydrate your cells. The electric charge in the water (via electrolysis) has also been said to create a healthy craving for the water.

2. Start your day off right

Try drinking 1-2 glasses of water the first thing in the morning when you wake up in order to replace water lost during slumber and get a head start on your daily water intake.

3. Take water wherever you go

Carry a refillable glass or BPA-free water bottle with you for easy access on-the-go, and make sure to always have a glass at your desk. Just having the water on hand will remind you to drink it and help you meet your quota.

4. Choose water instead of other beverages

Instead of reaching for a soda or sports drink, fill a glass of water instead. Substituting water for one 20-ounce soda will save you about 240 calories!

5. Sip water in between meals

Don’t reserve beverages for mealtime only – make sure to sip throughout the day. Every drop adds up!

6. Flavor it!

Adding flavor to water has been found to help people drink more than when left unflavored. Check out our suggestions for Ways to Jazz up the Flavor of Water.

7. Eat your water

Add more water-dense foods like broccoli, zucchini, watermelon, lettuce, tomatoes to your diet for added hydration.

4 Tips to Shift Your Eating Habits

Remember the Lay’s potato chip slogan “Betcha can’t eat just one?”

Well, it’s more than just a slogan, it’s a scientific fact that processed foods are designed to make you crave more of them by depriving you of the nutrition your body needs. Scientists in labs literally work to design foods which leave you feeling unsatisfied, so that you’ll consume more of the products the major brands they represent produce.

You Are What You Eat

It’s no wonder that our country is now facing an epidemic of lifestyle-related diseases like obesity, diabetes and cancer. Americans are bombarded with more processed food choices than ever, and the lure of the convienent fast food drive thru and dollar menu is on almost every street corner. Food can be a drug and it’s time that we start recognizing unhealthy foods as such.

Even animals are not immune to the addiction of processed foods, as evidenced in this funny video: Sam the Shoplifting Seagull Is Addicted to Doritos.

Taste is a Learned Response; Not a Fixed Response

Fortunately, taste is not a fixed sense and can be reprogrammed to get you craving the right type of foods that your body will thrive on instead of the foods that may ultimately destroy it.

According to Anna Coutler of Better World Cuisine, “Taste preferences will change with time and support your new way of eating. The understanding that enjoying a food can grow on us is absolutely true. After we have eaten a new food about a dozen times, the body will call for it again and it will become one of the preferred foods. By habitually stretching your palate, the tolerance and enjoyment of healthy foods will increase. The more one eats high-nutrient foods, the less one craves low-nutrient foods. Over time, wanting less fat, protein and carbohydrates happens naturally, and the fabulously healthy foods become our favorites.”

4 Tips to Shift Your Eating Habits

1. Introduce New Alkaline Foods Into Your Diet – It’s easier to add foods to your diet than to subtract them, so an easy tip is to try adding one new alkaline fruit or vegetable to your shopping cart each week. Examples include avocados, kale, spinach, cucumber, broccoli, asparagus, coconut, grapefruit and lemons.

2. Start Your Day With a Green Juice or Smoothie – According to raw food expert Karen Knowler, whatever type of food you eat upon rising (sugary, starchy, healthy, etc.) is what you are likely to crave for the remainder of the day. So by starting each day with a nutritious green juice or smoothie, you are setting yourself up for success.

3. Drink More Water – Oftentimes when we feel hungry, we are actually dehydrated. Try drinking a minimum of half your body weight in ounces daily in order to stay properly hydrated and to ward off food cravings. Chanson alkaline ionized water is able to hydrate and detoxify without leaving a bloated or waterlogged feeling. Visit us at www.chansonwater.com for more information.

4. Switch Your Sweetener – Sugar is highly addicting and has been linked to cancer, and artificial sweeteners are loaded with toxins that make them even more damaging to health. Instead, try stevia or xylitol. Both are natural sweeteners with a low glycemic index that will satisfy your sweet tooth.

Reduce Toxicity in Your Home With These 5 All Natural Cleaners

Commercial cleaning products can be quite costly. Not only financially but to your health and to the environment.

You may not think that adding a $4 bottle of cleaner to your shopping cart is a big expense, but it’s estimated that the average American family spends more than $400 a year on household cleaning products.

Commercial cleaning products contain many toxic chemicals that can cause damage and irritation to the eyes, skin, liver, lungs, nose, throat, etc. In fact, over 100 chemicals commonly found in homes have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer, psychological abnormalities, skin reactions, headaches, depression, joint pain, chronic fatigue, chest pains, dizziness, loss of sleep, and asthma.

Instead of harmful chemical cleaners try these five all natural alternatives:

1. Baking Soda – Acts as an all-purpose cleaner, deodorizer, water softener, and scour. You can add a small amount to a damp sponge or create a soft scrub-like paste by mixing with water and use to clean floors, tiles, tubs, glass, ovens, microwaves, coffee and tea pots, to shine stainless steel and silver, and to remove crayon marks from walls and painted furniture. You can also make an all-natural drain cleaner/declogger by pouring baking soda and white vinegar down the drain, followed by boiling water.

2. White Vinegar – Cuts grease, removes mildew, odors, some stains and wax build-up and can disinfect, deodorize, and de-gunk just about everything from shower curtains to sofa cushions. It also acts as a fabric softener, static reducer, mildew-inhibitor and all-natural weed killer. Combine with water in a spray bottle to wash windows and glass and to remove carpet stains.

3. Lemons – Lemon juice acts as an antiseptic effective against mold, germs and bacteria that can be used to clean and disinfect cutting boards. It is an effective degreaser that can be mixed in a spray bottle with water and spritzed on the stove, countertops and appliances. You can also create a paste by mixing with lemon juice with table salt and use to remove tarnish from copper and brass.

4. Cornstarch – Can be used to clean windows, remove grease stains, polish furniture and silver, and freshen carpet and rugs. You can also make your own spray starch to iron with by mixing corn starch with water in a spray bottle.

5. Acidic Water – Acidic water from a Chanson water ionizer has been 3rd party lab tested to kill E.coli and staph bacteria on contact when made at 2.7 pH. Chanson ionized acidic water can be used to clean and disinfect countertops, cutting boards, windows, doorknobs, toilets, sinks, etc. In fact, it works so well that the LA Times reported that hotel maids have taken to cleaning with it, and it is also an effective bug killer and stain remover.

Unlike the other cleaners listed above, acidic water does not leave a residue or lingering odor, will not harm or irritate skin and eyes, and is quick and easy to use. Just fill a spray bottle and spritz away! It can replace up to 50% of household cleaners on its own, saving you thousands in the long run. Visit www.chansonwater.com for more information.

Why Reverse Osmosis Water is Harmful to Health

The extreme water filtration process known as reverse osmosis rids tap water of virtually all nasty toxins, contaminants and bacteria, making it as pure and crystal clear as can be.

Sounds great, right?

Not exactly.

The problem with reverse osmosis (R/O) is that it works TOO well. In addition to removing all of the impurities, it also strips the water of all the valuable alkaline minerals your body needs to thrive. Essentially, R/O water is dead and lifeless, and most bottled waters on the market today are made with R/O water, not the pristine mountain spring water the ads may lead you to believe.

Although reverse osmosis water is very pure, you will never find it in nature. Water in nature always has total dissolved solids (TDS) in it. TDS are dissolved substances or minerals found in natural waters, which are what give the water life and help to nourish our bodies.

Due to the removal of alkaline minerals, R/O water has an acidic pH level instead of a neutral or alkaline pH which municipal tap water sources mandate. It also has a positive oxidation reduction potential (or +ORP) value, which means it is oxidizing to the body and creates cell-damaging free radicals.

When we consume acidic foods and liquids, our bodies are forced to rob themselves of alkaline minerals like calcium from our bones and magnesium from our heart to offset the unnatural imbalance, creating a mineral deficiency!

Over time, this continuous act of robbing Peter to pay Paul can take a real toll on our health. It’s no wonder that heart disease, osteoporosis, cancer, vision loss and other lifestyle-related diseases are rampant in our society today–most of us are drinking the wrong kind of water!

R/O systems waste approximately five gallons of water per gallon made, and that’s not including the water and oil needed to create the plastic bottles they often come in! With many scholars predicting a water and oil crisis in the not-so-distant future, it’s important to be water wise now more than ever.

A Better Drinking Water Solution

Alkaline ionized water from a Chanson water ionizer is full of bioavailable minerals, has an alkaline pH and an energizing, free-radical fighting -ORP. Chanson ionizers duplicate what happens in nature when water runs over rocks through electrolysis, separating alkaline and acidic ions so the remaining drinking water is healthy, mineral-rich and closer to what nature intended.

Water ionizers hook directly up to your tap, providing an on-demand water supply that is much cheaper, more convenient and better for the environment than bottled or homemade R/O water in the long run.

Because the onboard filter(s) that all brands of water ionizers come with provide a level of filtration far inferior to R/O systems, we strongly recommend pairing a drinking water pre-filter with your water ionizer. Or, if you already have a R/O system installed you can add a remineralizer in order for the ionizer to have minerals to ionize.

You will not get the same benefits from remineralized R/O water or a bottle of mineral water as you will from filtered water run through a water ionizer. This is because the minerals have not been ionized which makes them better absorbed by the body, nor has it been microclustered, which Japanese scientists believe makes it up to six times more hydrating and detoxifying. And finally because it has not been given a negative charge which helps fight free radicals instead of creating them.

Properly filtered alkaline ionized water from a Chanson water ionizer is the solution. Stop drinking dead, acidic, mineral-leeching R/O water today. Visit us at www.chansonwater.com for more information.

Just How Much is Your Health Worth?

The United States spends an estimated $2 trillion annually on healthcare expenses (more than any other industrialized country and 2.5 times more than average), yet only ranks #37 on the World Health Organization’s best care list. Drug costs alone represent $98 billion, and health care costs are rising at five times the rate of inflation.

The author of this article sold health insurance in California for the past three years and heard many a (completely justified) gripe about the cost of care vs. the shrinking number of benefits offered by the insurance carriers.

Most Americans get their health coverage through their employers, however many employers have been recently forced to reduce coverage and shift the cost of higher copays and deductibles to their employees. Since 1999, family premiums for employer-sponsored health coverage have increased by 131%. Thus, currently more than 45 million Americans are uninsured.

While we believe everyone should seek a minimum of catastrophic health insurance coverage since no one is exempt from accidents, wouldn’t it be wonderful to have health insurance from your tap? As more and more American doctors begin to recognize the benefits of alkaline ionized water, it is our hope that one day our health care system will cover or share the cost of a water ionizer for every household.

Unfortunately, the FDA currently prevents anything other than a drug from being advertised as able to “treat, cure or prevent a disease” so most doctors don’t yet prescribe one despite the growing list of positive scientific studies.

Water ionizers have been classified as a medical device in Japan for decades and have a proven safety record. Not only do Chanson water ionizers produce alkaline water for drinking, but the acidic water byproduct has over 500 uses including eco-friendly household cleaning and skin care. One out of every five homes in Japan contains a water ionizer, and many Asian hospitals use ionized acidic water for disinfecting and patient skin conditions like pressure ulcers (bedsores).

Occasionally we at Chanson headquarters are hit with the objection: “But a water ionizer is so expensive!”

We understand that at first glance, a $1,295-$2,195 price tag seems steep. But like any major appliance or sophisticated electronic device, the cost should be averaged over a long period of time. We’re guessing that you didn’t balk quite so much at the cost of your computer, stainless steel fridge or washer and dryer. Chances are you researched them when needed, purchased the model that best suited your needs, and won’t give it a second thought until the appliance breaks down and needs to be replaced.

The average family of three spends $400 a year or more on bottled water. They also spend another $400 a year on cleaning supplies and skin care products that can be replaced with Chanson acidic water which has been 3rd party lab tested to disinfect on contact.

So on average, the purchase of a Chanson water ionizer will save at least $800/year, not including the potential health savings as ionized water tends to address may types of health issues stemming from inflammation due to the apparent antioxidant power. Thus the cost of our Chanson Violet water ionizer and C3 Prefiltration System will pay for itself in less than two years and is less than half of the price of one competing model. And the cost of our top-performing Chanson M.A.X. ionizer paired with our deluxe Nano-Filtration System will pay for itself in about three and a half years!

We recently had a customer use pre-tax dollars from his Flexible Spending Account to purchase his Chanson water ionizer, so we recommend that you look into that option if your employer offers a FSA. We also offer financing with zero down and payments as low as $25/month on approved credit.

So rather than asking, “how can I afford a water ionizer?” a better question may be “how can I NOT afford a water ionizer?” Remember, alkaline ionized water from a Chanson ionizer is like Health Insurance from your Tap!™. Visit www.chansonwater.com for more information.

How Alkaline Ionized Water May Boost Your Sex Life

Could your kitchen be just as important to your sex life as your bedroom?

According to a British study, many couples run out of steam after having sex because they fail to drink enough water. Doctors have warned that couples who work up a sweat in bed risk dehydration unless they replenish their fluids.

Although nine out of ten people drink water after running or going to the gym, only two out of five people drink water after sex despite the fact that 30 minutes of strenuous sexual activity is as hard on the body as a three-mile run or a good gym workout.

We’ve all heard references to French lovers and how the French have heightened romance and sexuality. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the French have more sex than their British counterparts, but did you know that they also drink five times as much water?

Dr. John Leiper, an expert in fluid balance and hydration at Aberdeen University, says many people are unaware that intercourse can be as dehydrating as other forms of exercise. “Sweating, flushing and panting are all signs that the heart rate is faster, meaning that the body is reacting in the same way to sex as it does to other cardiovascular exercises. As we go about our daily activities we continually lose water, even when we are not visibly sweating, so when we take part in exercise or sexual activity this water loss increases and we need to replace it to prevent dehydration.”

Dehydration contributes to loss of libido, fatigue, headaches and vaginal dryness (which–in addition to decreasing pleasure–adds to tear-inducing friction of condoms). Research indicates that dehydration also decreases the volume of blood plasma, which results in less oxygen being delivered to the exercising muscle and increases breathing and heart rates. Since arousal depends on plenty of blood flow to the sexual organs, dehydration can affect sexual performance. Therefore, it’s important to stay hydrated before and after sex.

Sexual stamina drugs like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are acidifying to the body and have been linked to serious side effects including sudden permanent hearing loss and death by heart attack. Drinking alkaline ionized water instead is a natural alternative because it is the same frequency of the pineal gland (located in the brain) and thus affects all other glands below it and may stimulate sex drive.

According to Dr. Robert O. Young, author of The pH Miracle, “Sexual function and desire are products of the autonomic nervous system, which can be paralyzed by overacidity.” So how do you combat acidity? By hydrating with alkaline ionized water.

A diet rich in alkaline fruits and vegetables can also improve your prowess in the bedroom and keep you sexually healthy, as they provide necessary vitamins and minerals. Benefits of an alkaline diet can include increased production of sex hormones, greater ability to get and stay aroused, and changes in your brain chemistry that make it easier to get in the mood.

Certain beverages like alcohol, coffee and soda can decrease your sex drive and cause dehydration due to their diuretic effect if consumed in large quantities. Most bottled waters are acidic and stripped of minerals, and tap water is full of contaminants.

So instead, hydrate with Chanson ionized alkaline water (which is more hydrating than conventional water because it is microclustered and can therefore penetrate cells deeper) to avoid dehydration, boost your energy levels, and (hopefully) improve your sex life!

We recommend that you drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of Chanson ionized alkaline water daily (and more if you have a really steamy session between the sheets!)
